Dial-up W/ A Cell Phone

Sun May 12, 2002 7:40 am

Has anyone tried this? I'd like to use my cell phone to dial up with my laptop when away from home. How do I set this up? Thanks in advance.

You can do this one of two ways, there is a cable connection for connecting you phone to your laptop, or you can connect the phone to the laptop via the infra red port on both (assuming that they both have such a thing.

I thought you needed a special type of modem?

There's cables out there that allow this. Just plug into cellphone and computer's tel-jack. I did it with a Nokia and a Mac laptop

ok, I have a cable with one end that goes into my nokia and the other end is a female serial db9 plug. Don't know how the laptop will recognize it as a modem or dial the number thru it.

Many cellphones have an AT-command-set-compatible modem built in. Which means the phone behaves very much like a conventional serial modem. The connector goes into one of your computer´s serial ports.

You´d possibly need the right protocol configuration file for this phone ("modem description" for MacOS) if your system can´t work with the phone right out of the box. Try to get it from the phone´s manufacturer (if it didn´t come with the phone or the cable). It´s quite possible that several phones from the same manufacturer use the same modem commands, so you may not need an exact match.
