Why Do We Call Our Numerals 'Arabic' Numbers?

Mon May 13, 2002 11:39 pm

I know this is a bit of an obtuse question, but why is it that we call our numbering system 'Arabic' numberals, when of course the arabs have their own symbols to depict the individual numbers?

Please can someone enlighten me?
