You know, I'd love to have the ground shake every once in a while. I think I live in one of the most geologically stable places on earth.

Not that I know of, just a few things fell off of shelves. Rolled for about 20 seconds after the initial jolt.

We were about 35-40 miles NW of the epicenter, and honestly, the shaking was very minimal. It rocked the dinner table a bit, but as far as I can tell, not even a scrap of paper was disarranged. We sit on unconsolidated soil and not stable bedrock, so I would have expected to have felt a little more shaking for a 5.2

We actually have a small thrust fault very close to our house, and every few months, it let's loose a pretty good jolt. I suspected it was just "one of those" until the program I was watching was interrupted for a news briefing.

The only thing that concerns me is that this might have been a foreshock. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

My only earthquake experience was a couple of years ago in Tokyo. I was in my room on the 28th floor of a hotel overlooking the river. I had just finished breakfast, and was standing at the window looking out at the view, when suddenly everything rumbled. I almost shat myself! It was a moderately severe quake, about 5, but, as it was the first I had experienced, I was quite shook up, in several ways.
Glad you guys are OK.
Cheers

Wow....I hope no one was hurt or anything damaged.

HOWEVER....

I have driven through Gilroy on several occasions (on my way to San Jose from Fresno), and I didn't see anything other than empty fields and garlic. It is a refreshing change away from the concrete I see all the time though.

Man....I'd hate to think of the SMELL if all of the garlic got stirred up.

In my country an earthquake is frequent incident and sometimes brings serious disaster.
We have a saying which means;most fearful things in order,
Earthquake,Thunder,Fire,Father.
The earthquake is the most fearful.
In fact, in 1995 saw 5000 people killed in the huge earthquake, in which the mother of my acquaintance was dead. In addition an earthquake shook in the bottom of the ocean often generates Tsunami, sea wave of incredible tall about 10-100feet. Tsunami hits men on the beach to stop the breath or destroys the building into pieces and withdraws with everything along the sea shore. In 1995 200 people were the victims of this Tsunami.
Also in 1960 the earthquake in Chile, South America reaches Japanese coast facing the Pacific ocean.
By the way is "Tsunami" an usual English word?

We had a 4.something here in my bit of the UK a while ago! Thats a rarity!

Smolt - Yes we use the word tsunami! Sometimes we call them 'tidal waves', but this is of course not a correct description!

Gilroy has 40K people????????

Where are they?

'Cuz all I saw of Gilroy was what I saw off of SR152 and US 101. And all I saw was mostly countryside and a few farms and a few farm buildings and very few (albeit very nice) houses.

I guess the city proper extends to a much larger area than I thought.

Matt,

We are about 43,000 actually. Most of the town is on the west side of 101. Mostly farms and ranches on the east side of 101.

Sorry Guys,

Wed May 15, 2002 3:54 am

Sorry guys (my fellow bay area residents), but that was my fault. (no pun intended.)

See, I was driving back from Monterey with my gf and things got a little... interesting around Gilroy. I mean, I knew I was good, but I had no idea I was *that* good. So, if I caused any damage in your house or gave you a scare, I apologize.  Smile

In all seriousness, that was actually my first earthquake since moving here from Boston in 2000. I live in the Foster City area and it was quite a jolt for me. I know it was "only a 5.2" but it was also a very shallow quake which is why it was felt so strongly so far away.

The most eerie thing is that it was nothing like what I expected it to be. I always thought there's an initial "pop" upwards and then audible rumbling. There was no pop, and there was no rumble. In fact, it was very quiet until my house started creaking and groaning. At first I thought it was a passing truck, or one of the red-eyes leaving from SFO. (They often take off over Foster City at night.) But, as it progressed, it got stronger and stronger, and since I couldn't hear a truck or a plane, obviously, I became very agitated. I actually ran to a doorway, then ran out of the house. I would be just fine if I never experience another earthquake.

It did not really bother me at all. I had my headphones on so I could not hear anything. First I thought it was my upstairs neighbors jumping around (I was seriously about to go raise hell with them), but when it was moving side to side I figured it out.

My first earthquake and to tell you the truth it seemed to be over before it started, not really that scary.

Only 5.2? Not even a coffee-spiller.  Laugh out loud

But seriously, the rolling is the worst part. I think the shaking and everything is kind of fun (as long as you don't get bonked in the head with something), but the rolling-- last time I was in a major earthquake (last year), it rolled for about 30 seconds following the quake and I very nearly got sick. It felt like a tire swing except more violent and dizzying.
north dakota sucks.

Didn't feel anything here! Of course, I live in Orange County, so I wouldn't. I've seen all sorts of earthquakes, 7 pointers to 5 pointers, (We never notice anything under 3.5 usually)...I hate quakes, they really scare the pants of some of us here, including me.. And...why do the big ones always have to happen in the middle of the night?! Nothing worse than waking up to crazy shaking. Okay im done ranting, back to studyin!

So, here's a question for you *real* Californians (I'm just a temporary poser): just how far does the ground swing you during a real earthquake? Are we talking inches? feet?

The best way I can describe an earthquake to anyone who has never felt one is that it feels just like turbulence in an airplane. It is a low frequency rumbling and vibration wheere everything around you shakes.

I've never actually seen the ground move.

as long as I've been alive, I've never seen the ground split like the Red Sea or huge, hundred foot deep crevasses open up in the ground, looking to swallow houses and cars and people whole.

All of that is the product of Hollywood.

I remember experiencing the Northridge and Landers 'quakes of '94 and '92 respectively. (along with numerous others) Both were very powerful. But neither one knocked me to the ground. I was in bed when Northridge hit. I stayed in bed. I wasn't thrown out or anything. And I was out walking across a parking lot about to have an early breakfast when Landers hit. Same thing. Lots of shaking. But I stayed on my feet.

Northridge sure threw me off my feet...I was like 8 or 9...it was scary. I remember in the morning my little brother didn't want to go near our pool. He was afraid of the "After-Sharks" Big grin  Laugh out loud  Laugh out loud

Initially, I always get a sense of a disturbance in my equilibrium when an earthquake is going on. You know something is happening, but just aren't quite sure of what until a couple of seconds into it. Until you see something else moving back and forth too.

Hard to describe that feeling.

It's almost like when you're at a stoplight, and you have your foot on the brake. But the car next to you is rolling forward slightly, and in a panic you're frantically stepping on the brake because you think you're going to roll out into the intersection. But one second later you realize it's the other car who's moving, not you.

Kinda like that.

Despite never being in a major quake it must be frustrating after enduring the side to side waves to then wait for the up and down waves and then the wavy waves! The delay is due to different types of shockwaves travelling at different speeds in the vary types of rock in the earth's core!!! Wow all those physics lessons are paying off!

I also learnt that people on the other side of the world can sometimes feel a quake a couple of hours later because the waves travel into the centre of the earth too! Has anyone experienced this?
