Does Super Glue Really Work?

Fri May 17, 2002 2:02 pm

I'm curious, how many airliners.net users have bought super glue (liquid glue intended to bond most surfaces to each other instantaneously) and found that the stuff just doesn't work?

I broke a saucer a couple of weeks ago, and decided to glue the two cleanly-broken halves together. However, when I put the super glue on and attempted to cement the saucer back together, the glue would not bond. The only thing I succeeded in doing was bonding my finger to part of the saucer, and the bottom of one half of the saucer to the glass top of my coffee table, briefly. The glue did not work at all. Last night, I attempted to super-glue two resin engines onto the plastic wings of a 1/144 scale model, but again, the glue would not set. Only after taping the pieces together for over 30 minutes did the glue eventually bond the pieces together.

My experience has been that, for the most part, super glue rarely acts as the manufacturer promises. Silly topic, maybe, but I'm curious to see how others have fared.  Big grin

There are different types... each with different setting times.

Some are instant, and some are slow setting.

They have a spray on accelerator that you can find in hobby stores that makes slow CA set instantly.

Do CA's work? If you use the right one for the job.... yeah they do.

Having driven someone to hospital to have their hand surgically removed from the model they were building (I always think of him holding the phone to call me with a battleship attached!) I can promise you that it does work. It also bonds embarrassment to the person instantly, and refuses to come unstuck. I'm still laughing.... Big grin

Oh yes, it works! But there are some materials which don't bond as easily. Certain acids for instance will eat through anything at all, but won't do anything to glass. Perhaps your dish was made one out of a cew types of porcilain that does not bond like others.

Cyanoacrylate glues (the ones usually known as "superglue") work remarkably well- but they are good only for perfect-fit situations, with non-porous surfaces.

Often, ceramics (like you've described) are less well-bonded with superglues, especially the typical thin-viscosity (more liquid) varieties. There are thicker (more viscous) formulations which work better for porous surfaces and do better at "gap filling."

In all likelihood, the glue simply soaked into the absorbent surface of the broken edges, rather than remaining on the surface to bond.

I also have had no luck with CA glue, almost as if I was trying to bond the surfaces with water. I thought I was the only one.

A tragic young couple named Kelly

One night, sad but true,
They mistook Super Glue

IL....well you can use this foolproof test. Just put a couple of drops on one finger and stick that finger to another and let it set for a while...heheheh make an axe handy beforehand and a chisel.  Big thumbs up

That's the irony. It works on my fingers, just not the model.

For all the skin bonding rocket scientists in here... accetone (nail polish remover) instantly disolves the bond.

oh yes superglue works !!, having had to remove many objects from peoples fingers, not to mention having to remove fingers from foreheads, and on rare occasion eyelids (don't ask it's not fun).

but there is another use for a cousin of super glue, for the repair of lacerations there is Dermabond, naturally enough for those of you with an interest in such things I have provided the following link
http://www.jnj.com/innovations/in_dermabond.html

On day just for fun I'll describe how we treat Priaprism, trust me it's not for the faint of heart.

And yes I DO love working in the ER.

To be delicate... it is when "he" will not go away once he is "finished" sometime later hours+ the pain is quite severe, and to make him "go away" if medication will not work we insert a syringe (after numbing "him" with lidocaine) with a large bore needle (14-16 guage) into the areas (note areas) in "him" that make him be him and withdraw blood in circurlar patern to make "him" go away", yes it is painful.

But back to the topic, as I said in my reply superglue does work, better on somethings than others.

now if only some-one would start a "strange medical procedures" thread I could spout off a couple of dozen Er oddities for you and not be too off topic

You mean permanent erection (we're all adults)? Can I sign up to get one of those?

I though supper glue was invented for soldiers in the Vietnam war field to close wounds.

I've found that if I can leave something alone long enough for the super-glue to take effect it will hold darn near forever. Case in point, when I was about five or six years old I had a brand new toy truck that promptly lost a wheel. I super-glued the wheel back on an I played with that truck for at least another couple of years. The wheel did not turn anymore though.

Ilyushin96M,

Are you sure it was Super glue you were using? Maybe it was only Really Good or Better Than Most glue?

Here's the name on the bottle:

Instant Krazy Glue Advanced Formula

So it's supposed to be pretty good. FYI, a friend told me this particular brand of superglue doesn't bond plastic and resin very well. I aparently need a special modelling glue for that.

Regardless, I've found that this stuff bonds skin to skin better than anything else. LOL! Luckily, I am careful about getting it on my fingers.
