Alco, GM Or GE (Train Related)

Which engine manufacurer (of the big 3) do you prefer? A(merican)L(ocomotive)Co., GE or GM/EMD?

My personal choice is EMD

Depends on the era I guess. I like all EMD's from all eras, but I'm especially a fan of the EMD "E" and "F" units, as well as the 1st generation roadswitchers. 1st generation 567 powered prime movers sound best of all EMD's IMO. -- Like pretty much all Alco's, with the RS2/RS3 series being my favorite. "Century" series also have a certain brutish quality that appeal to me. -- GE's? Later U-boats and the Dash 7 series ( love those radiators ) look husky and I like the "chug" and smoke of their prime movers. The newer widecab Dash 8/Dash 9's are OK, but the rest of the GE stuf is uglier than snot...and the Genesis passenger locomotive is the most hideous yet. -- That's from an enthusiasts stanpoint: But if I were running a class 1 RR, I'd probably go with 2nd gen EMD power. SD40-2's, and the ever versatile and reliable as the day is long GP38.

I love the classic lines of the "F" series; the ultimate in cool, especially in mostly-unpainted colors.

What a stir they made when first they appeared, against a backdrop of cinders and steam.

I think GE's AMD-103 is a very good looking engine, especially in the Amtrak livery.

CSX also uses 12-wheelers for their coal trains which look pretty sharp, but I forgot who makes them.

The 6-axle power on CSX coal trains is mostly GE C40-8's and C44-9 wide nose...and some EMD SD70MAC's. Of course, they're not the ONLY power you'll see, but for the most part that's what you'll see on unit coal trains. -- As far as the AMD-103 Genesis, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree: Although their are exceptions, it seems to be based on age. The younger ( teen ) fans tend to like them, as do Europeans. To me, it looks like the box it came in. The new "Acela" inspired paint scheme helps somewhat though...and they DO have a nice throaty exhaust note. -- It really hit us a few years ago when a few other fans and myself were at the Danbury ( Ct. ) RR museum raildays near the MNCRR station there. We were trying to get photos ( slides ) of the remaining Metro North classic EMD F-units in action there, while a group of younger ( I'm guessing 14-17 y/o ) were totally ignoring them and and going nuts over the newer "grey ghost" MNCRR Genesis power...even wearing hats and shirts with little AMD103's embroidered on them. I guess they'll grow on me eventually: I used to be lukewarm on the old Amtrak F40's and now THEY are looking real good now Smile

For passenger service, I prefer GM's F40-PH to the new GE P32/P40/P42 Genesis units--the F40s had character! The Genesis locos are nice, have all the latest safety improvements, etc.--but I prefer an F40 on the East Coast service trains (the ones that don't cross the Mississippi) because they're all single-story cars, as the Genesis locos do look nice when coupled to the Sunset Ltd or any other Superliner service train.

In 4-axle freight, I really prefer a GP-38 (in new CSX colors, of course!) and in 6-axle, I'd have to say it's a toss-up between the C44-9W and the AC4400W--I suppose the only difference between those two is that one is an AC traction loco.

DC10Tony, I can answer that question - I was out at WPK all day yesterday here in Orlando and the CSX/OUCX (Orlando Utilities Commission) coal train's HE consisted of two C44-9Ws.
