Canada switched to the Metric System in 1980. Although the Metric system is official, many measurements are still made in the English system. For instance, on many ads for office space and apartments I saw in Montreal, the measurement was in square feet (or pieds carrés if you wish), and one time listening to a Toronto radio station they gave out temperatures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. I think that since Canada is still fairly recent into their transition (recent is relative, for instance when you consider France has been using it for over 200 years), there are still a lot of people more comfortable with the English system, but as generations pass the Metric system will truly take over as the only and true measurement system in Canada, a country the US can take a cue from!
