Is It °F Or °C In Canada

Sun May 26, 2002 6:49 pm

I was just wondering which measurement of temperature is used in Canada degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Celsius.
I am interested to know because my father found a sleeping bag that says "0 degree" and it seems to be a very good sleeping bag but if it was in Celsius it would be a pretty bad one.
I need to know because I need at least a -10??C one for a camp I'm going on.

Thanks in Advance

Where are you going that requires a -10 sleeping bag???

Temps on the news I saw where displayed in C.

It really makes taking about the weather to that girl I chat with in Toronto interesting. We deal with different scales.

LAX, on a Mac its shift-option-8 (°). Try shift-alt-8 and see what happens.

I remember in Toronto the thermostats in the hotels were C°.

In Canada we use Celsius, yeah.

In METAR messages you get temperature in Celsius and altitude in feet, not meters, even if the metrical system is the official one here.

I ask the same questions, and the people I ask ( in their 30's I guess ) tell me they are taught Centigade in school. From my eyes as a frequent visitor, there seems to be a difference between what is used by the people and the "official" side...media, roadsigns: I still hear many refer to temps in Fahrenheit, distances in feet/miles etc...and the way they matter-of-factly use the terms I doubt they were converting the systems for my benefit. Just my experiences mind you.

Canada switched to the Metric System in 1980. Although the Metric system is official, many measurements are still made in the English system. For instance, on many ads for office space and apartments I saw in Montreal, the measurement was in square feet (or pieds carrés if you wish), and one time listening to a Toronto radio station they gave out temperatures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. I think that since Canada is still fairly recent into their transition (recent is relative, for instance when you consider France has been using it for over 200 years), there are still a lot of people more comfortable with the English system, but as generations pass the Metric system will truly take over as the only and true measurement system in Canada, a country the US can take a cue from!

MagicMan_841: Also, there are very few countries that don't use feet in flying, as it is what flight levels are generally calculated in, and allow the plane to fly safely distanced apart vertically with nice round numbers like 2,000ft, versus 660m. The only country off the top of my head that make airliners fly in and converse in metres is Russia, although I'm certain there are others as well.
