Just Bought An IMac - How Do I Use It?

Thu May 30, 2002 1:19 am

Well, it's not actually me, but a friend. He's just bought an iMac with 800mhz/DVD-R/256/60 etc. etc. (basically the top one).

He's been used to Windows 98 but he's a slave to design and cool advertising. Does anyone have any tips to remember when using it? I'm on it at the moment and it looks very lovely.....just a different way of working to Windows.

I thought the whole idea about the iMac was that you could simply plug it in and go...

Yep, but all you get with it is the operating system which will not run his old Windows software.
He'll have to go out and buy a fortune worth of Mac software (which may well be very hard to find as the market is small, and will be very expensive, typically 2-3 times at least what the equivalent PC package would cost).

A better solution that many have taken is removing all the electronics and turning them into fancy techy-looking aquariums. Far more soothing, cheaper to operate, and just as usefull.

Um, right.

So MS Office costs 2-3x as much for a Mac than for Windows? Right. Why don't you go look it up.

If he is a slave to design, he will know the software he needs. And if he is a slave to design, then he has chosen the correct platform to use his skills.

Jwenting,

You must not be familiar with Pro Tools or any kind of media like movies/tv. Those fields are completely dominated by Macs.

You want games, buy a PC. That is the only advantage.

And Mac software is hard to find? Heh. You don't get anything with it? iMovie, iDVD? Oh yeah, that's everything you need to import from a dv cam and burn a DVD. But that's right, the computer doesn't come with anything but the OS.

Just relax. The neat thing with the Mac is that it´s easier than you might expect. (And it´s usually the other way around with Windows, from my experience...  Wink/being sarcastic)

There are lots of excellent applications and utilities at reasonable prices or even for free; From my experience, it´s predominantly the thousands of crappy junk programs that you´d miss on the Mac. Or you might not, at that.  Wink/being sarcastic

Just relax!  Big thumbs up

You tie a rope to it and use it for a boat anchor.

The Mac has been since 1990 the computer equivlent of the 352 Ford engine.

Here's a tip...you won't get another windows related virus again...EVER!!!

I love Macs! They are the best at making a stable software that's not opensource!

Bear in mind some Macs make better anchors than others. The iMac is far too light, let me suggest something like a Power Mac 7100, that thing weighs a ton.

I all seriousness. In my use of Macs I have never found the OS to be as intuitive as Windows. Unless you have all your software shortcutted on the desktop you have to go through the rather messy process of getting to it from the "Mac HD" icon. It is a little akin to opening Netscape via the "My Computer" icon. I think the Windows start menu works far better in that regard. And I may just be dumb, but I found hardware management to be next to impossible with MacOS, is it under control panel, extensions... why can't there be a menu like Windows has.

I've known plenty of hardcore Mac purists out there and they will admit the shortcomings of MacOS. I've seen plents Macs frozen and crashed too.

Where the Mac has been and generally is superior is in the internal bits. With the exception of some of the ill-fated consumer Macs, they were built with fast SCSI buses and the Motorola chips are generally stronger than comparable Intel/AMD chips. My only beef with Macs, and other Mac loyalists as well, is the lack of internal expandability on all but the highest end Macs (but today even the G4s have little internal expandability). One friend had a beige G3 tower with a zip and CD-R daisy chained from his SCSI port. Any decent Wintel machine all that stuff could be installed internally.

I absolulutly hate Macs. They stupid things are always freezing and loosing data while they freeze. My school gets deep discounts through Mac to purchase tons of them for the school in hopes that the kids will use them, like them and go home to tell their parents to buy one. The school ones have the least amount of memory possible and can only run basic word processor programs. You try and load Microsoft powerpoint and it runs out of memory and freezes. The Macintosh servers are also extremely unreliable. This year alone the Macintosh server has gone down 3 or 4 times while the PC server has yet to go out. Same way last year too. My suggestion would be to put it back in the box and ship it back to Mac and get your money back.

Dinker, do PC's run good with inadaquate RAM  Insane

After that comment, I doubt the Macs at your school are properly maintained. That could explain why they 'go out' all the time.

A computer is only as good as the people that maintain it.

Its just the opposite at my work. We are a Mac house with Mac servers & Mac workstations and most important, a Mac tech. Those things are souped out and maintained well. They are incredibly reliable and powerful. We have 3 PCs that don't get tended to. They are shit-boxes that get barely muster enough strengh to run the OS.

Mac software is very hard to find, at least here it is.
Where I live there must be a dozen stores selling PC software (all kinds, not just games) and only one of those has a single shelf of Mac software (mostly older stuff too).

Jwenting, Mac titles are available for anything, but I do agree it is difficult to find them in a store. You usually only find them when bundled with the PC version on a CD. But Mac users are generally accustomed to ordering their titles from a catalog anyway, so its not a big deal that the stuff isn't at Best Buy or wherever. I challenge anyone to come up with a software catagory that you can't find a Mac version for.

JetService. I agree with you about how the things are maintaned. Just seems kinda odd to me that you would sell a school a whole heap of macs with nobody trained to service them. Kids think they don't work right there going to go home and tell their parents that they are a piece of junk and they should buy a PC instead. Kinda defeats the purpose of selling them cheap to schools in the first place to get the kids to purchase one.

Dinker, well, that sounds more like the school's problem rather than Apple's. My sons school's Macs run fine (according to him). IMHO, its the responsibility of the facility or the individual to see to it that routine support is maintained. I mean what can Apple do about that? Hire support for them or refuse to sell to them? The school just needs to hire the right people or even a freelancer. But I think its a mistake to judge the entire platform on that situation.

Heh.

Apple doesn't sell computers to schools so the kids will go home and tell their parents and then they will buy them.

To all of you who said stuff about a mac basically being a paperweight or anchor or whatever, you really are missing a whole lot.

PC's blow
The one I have is absolutely impossible to manage my digital photos. Install the software, upload, everytime I move the photo its saved as another one. Then the fact that everything has to be in the right folder for an application to run or for my website to work. Mac's, you can have something saved as under one name with no ".xxx", and it will find it.
