VW's Strategy Of Luxury Sedan,SUV & Supersportcar!

Sat Jun 01, 2002 9:58 am

HI everyone i know quite a few number of you are VW supports here. In fact, i am one of you, i think we are very impressed by their high qualities, good engineering, and thier stylish image (That's the case in Asia).

Particularly after VW bought Audi, they really have a large improvement in design, technology, and quality. But seems after they learn something from Audi and other brands that they control, they want everything in other own VW brand.

Now we can see there is a Phaeton, Touareg (SUV), which are not only the competitor to MB S-class & BMW 7, but also to Audi A8!! Why? They are even going to produce a small Bentley. Also the Touareg, are they forgot they have an Audi Allroad already? In fact i can see Tourague maybe even a more luxury and better performance one (Their world's highest performance diesel V10 engine). But why they need something in VW brand that is more expensive and higher class image one? Also the W12 coupe, they have Lamborghini Murcielago already, and they have Bugatti in development phase, who need a VW super car? i wonder, it sounds like they lost their soul.

AHEM!! Audi was the worst brand EVER before VW took them over. VW didn't learn anything from Audi, it merely turned Audi into a luxury car firm. Audi was appaling. I remember it made a three valve monstrosoty that was voted numerous times the worst car ever.

I have read elsewhere that VW and Audi are trying to distance themselves on a corporate level. VW has purchased many companies recently, such as SEAT and Skoda, and they are using these to position themselves differently. SEAT and Skoda will provide cars for markets where VW was before. This makes VW go upscale. In former chairman Ferdinand Piech's mind, VW is going after Mercedes-Benz, while Audi is being positioned to fight off BMW.

The Audi Allroad hasn't been successful, and they will have their own SUV based on the VW Magellan shown at Detroit earlier this year. Audi will also focus on bigger engines, and get rid of turbocharging, in order to go after a different image than VW. So instead of engines like the 2.7T, they'll have 4.0 engines instead to produce the same power. I guess this is all very interesting to Europeans who get all the choice of the whole VW Auto group and have all corners of the market covered, but here in North America, VW must be careful not to alienate their loyal customers by bringing VW more and more upmarket. I think so far they are doing a great job, and their current products are excellent. They still provide reasonably low entry level prices to their cars which are well equiped already. Now if they could only improve their emissions sensors, which give too many headaches!

Do anyone actually know when did VW buy Audi? And was A4 the first model after VW bought Audi?
I don't know it was VW made Audi into a luxury car firm, but is there anything that VW learn from Audi? say in the technology area?

Why is that LOT? Are you afraid it will be better than an American SUV?

Worse?

Their VW SUV has almost the same interior to their lastest Phaeton, and the SUV's platform is share with Porsche's Cayenne.

But it wont have a pushrod V8 and leaf springs and remedial 4X4 or really cheap interior, so it can't be a real truck. And of course it will be criticized for being too expensive. They talk about low to mid $30's in the U.S. for the base model (and base VW's are already well equiped), to much higher for the W12 version, which is over the top if you ask me. That's right in there with many much more basic albeit more powerful American SUV's, such as Durango's, Grand Cherokees and Envoy's.

While I love VW's though, I can't say I'm impressed by the first official photos I've seen of the exterior. I'll wait to see it in person to reserve my judgement.
