Rivaldo!

Mon Jun 03, 2002 7:49 pm

Rivaldo (Barce) has just hit a Penalty Kick (that wasn't suppose to be a penalty kick, rather a free kick) in the 86th minute and has given the win to Brazil on Turkey. I have also won because I placed a 1000 Shekel Bet on Brazil and now I won!

Rivaldo has to be one of the unfairest and gayest players in the whole world cup. I've never seen something more lame and gay than this action by him.

I didn't like how the ball hit his thigh and he held his head. Pathetic. It was a red-card anyway...

I do agree with Racko.

what he did was so unfair. he is a disgrace to the sport...
it was a gay, disgusting act, trying to get a player sent off in that way..

GKirk, in my 1986 Collins Dictionary, "gay" in the modern sense isn't listed! It's defined as:

Full of mirth; light-hearted, lively, cheerful, merry; given to pleasure; (euphemistic) wanton, licentious; showy, brilliant in appearance, dressed in bright colours.

Therefore, one supposes they are invoking the "wanton, licentious" aspect of this definition!

As much as i admire Rivaldo for his skill and talent, the play acting against Turkey was shocking. At first i thought he was hit on the head by a object from the crowd, then i realised he hadn't. Unbelievable or what?

I hope that Rivaldo is branded a cheat just as Bilic was when he got Laurent Blanc sent off in 98 with a similar act. I feel bad for Turkey as Brasil didn't deserve to beat them like that. It will be good if Turkey get through after this, as they looked a good side for much of the match.

Rivaldo's comments on the matter: (keeps getting deleted)

Brazil's Rivaldo has said he used his "experience" to get Turkey's Hakan Unsal sent off during the World Cup group C match in which he was caught playacting on the stadium's big screen.

Hakan Unsal was dismissed in the last minute of the match after kicking the ball at Rivaldo, who was waiting to take a corner. The ball clearly hit Rivaldo, who sealed Brazil's 2-1 victory with a late penalty, in the midriff but the Barcelona player fell backwards in apparent agony clutching his face.
The whole incident was shown in close-up on the stadium's big screen and boos echoed around the ground.

"My experience counts," Rivaldo said. "I think he deserved to be sent off, of course he didn't get me in a place where I could be hurt. But you don't do the sort of thing he did so he deserved the sending-off."

"expierence"

Maybe someone should give him the expierence of how it feels to be really hit by a ball in the face...but not after such a soft shot, maybe Roberto Carlos could show it to him...

He should have got a red card for that stupid and ridiculous action...his overreaction was extremely unprofessional. But the referee was one of the worst I have seen at the world cup anyway. That was not a penalty, the infringement took place 2 metres before the box. Very poor refereeing...red card to him and Rivaldo.

But the ref was right about both red cards. Remember the second one was only a yellow/red.

FIFA could fine / suspend Rivaldo.....
_________________________________________________________________
Rivaldo could face ban

Rivaldo's reaction will be investigated

Brazil playmaker Rivaldo could face a fine and suspension for "simulation" after Fifa confirmed it will study video evidence of his clash with Turkey's Hakan Unsal.
Rivaldo has admitted to fooling the referee by clutching his face after Unsal kicked the ball at his leg in the closing moments of Brazil's 2-1 victory on Monday.

Korean referee Yung Joo Kim showed Unsal a red card, leading to boos from the crowd as the incident was replayed on the stadium's giant screens.

"We have gone into the World Cup making it clear there will be a clampdown on simulation, which is Fifa-speak for cheating," said Fifa spokesman Keith Cooper.

"If the disciplinary commission think there is sufficient cause they will take a second or third look at any incident and rule accordingly."

Cooper added the commission would not discuss rescinding Unsal's red card.

"I say sorry, but this happens in football," said Rivaldo. "The ball hit my leg and not my face, but the Turkish player was still wrong.

"My experience counts. I think he deserved to be sent off.

"Of course he didn't get me in a place where I could be hurt, but you don't do the sort of thing he did, so he deserved the sending off."

The Brazilian was waiting to take a corner soon after scoring what proved to be the game-winning penalty, and his reaction provoked angry scenes.

"The ball hit him on the leg and he went down clutching his face," said Turkey midfielder Emre Asik. "Is that normal?"

An appropriate ban in my opinion would be to ban him from the rest of the world cup. What he did was as unsportsmanlike as it gets, and may have cost Turkey the game. The world cup only comes around every four years, and this should not be tolerated in any way at all, period. Just disgusting what he did.

So this is World Cup eh? Are not decisions judged or made for actions and not reactions? FIFA has a serious problem on their hands. As for Rivaldo, hehehehe
Brasil will probably lift the world cup high. WHERE the hell is ITALIA!?!

And here's the big FIFA cop-out taken from http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport3/worldcup2002/hi/matches_wallchart/brazil_v_turkey/newsid_2023000/2023985.stm

"Brazil's Rivaldo has revealed he has no regrets about feigning injury during Monday's 2-1 win over Turkey, despite being fined £5,180 ($7,350)."

How long do you think it takes for Rivaldo's bank balance to accrue that amount of interest - 2 days? How much is that fine in relation to his wages - probably no more than half-a-day. Yes, FIFA, you certainly have clamped down hard on "simulation"  Yeah sure.

One wonders if the same punishment would have been meted out if it was Hakan Unsal doing the "dying swan". Actually, I know the answer: minimum of 1 match ban and a $30,000 fine.

How about before each game, the players each put 5 grand in the pot then when they go on the pitch, ignore all the rules and the one who comes up with the best con wins the lot?

It's a discrace and FIFA will live to regret their cowardice.

Humph, as far I saw the whole Brazilian team concentrated on "simulating" (the offical term for diving), shirt tugging (ripping) and general BS.
Really felt for Turkey they were there to play football, pity the other team wasn't.

Brazil would have won 5-0 if they had applied the football skills they obviously have, but no, they had to play the prima donnas, which is a real shame - such football talent wasted. Luckily for them the South Korean referee was in such awe of them that he was a disgrace to the game.

This was totally unlike his countrymen who played a great energy filled and highly skilled game - a great spectacle and advertisement for football/soccer.

I see "simulating" ALL THE TIME in soccer. EVERY player does it. Sometimes it fools the refree, sometimes not. I don't know why everyone is so suprised that Rivaldo did it.

True to a degree, Hartsfieldboy. In fact FIFA really should have clamped down on it years ago. Laurent Blanc missed the world cup final after sent off because of Slaven Bilic's acting, and Costacurta missed a European Cup final after an outrageous dive by Jurgen Klinsmann. But there is a slight difference between making the most of a foul in order to be certain of a free kick (distasteful as it is), and delibarate play-acting in order to get an opposing player sent-off. Unfortunately, until the authorities really hit the offenders with big punishments it will continue.

The bit that upsets me is that Rivaldo is a magical player who children love to try to copy. We will certainly see more acting on the park pitches because of this. He should have been suspended.
