Hotmail: Sharing Your Information (Spam?)

Sun Jun 09, 2002 11:43 pm

Hello,

Hotmail recently (not sure exactly) added 2 boxes under people's personal profiles in the options section:

-- Share my e-mail address.
-- Share my first and last names.
-- Share my other registration information.

The first and the last were checked automatically without informing people.

Responsible for huge increase in Spam recently?

Possibly, but Hotmail was the only mail service that I opened an account on that already had spam in the Inbox (and I don't mean the standard welcome message).

I let my Hotmail account lapse. Spammers love Hotmail and I was offended by the content and quantity of what I was receiving. I've learned my lesson. I read every website's privacy policy and opt out of receiving messages from them. If they don't have an opt out option, I NEVER give them my email address or any other information....nor do I give them my business.

Microsoft sucks, by the way.

Honnestly, I am tired with Hotmail. My account was opened in 97 and I had an average of 50 (!) daily spam messages. I've opened a new account, and I have already a few spam messages coming in. Hotmail sucks.

What you can do, is blocking all the spam.

I had about 10-15 messages a day, and it is now reduced to about 4 a day.

And BTW, you can implement a filter, so the most messages don't come in your inbox.

Frederic

I think all the filter does is filter out all the spam that doesn't come from hotmail. all the shit they send just "falls through the cracks" i guess.

The filter,as Mcringring says in other words,is crap. You can only block a certain number of accounts too which is annoying.Yahoo is better

Frederic, you cannot keep up with the filter. You can put in only 150 addresses. At the rate at which I receive spam on Hotmail, about 200 a week (which btw is no greater than on my other accounts, sad but true) the filter is exhausted after about 5 days.
I keep the account open only as a means of providing a non-bouncing address to sites that want one where I don't want to send my true address to  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hotmail also has an auto filter without having to add all the email adresses. Go to "Junk mail filter" in options. This won't help you much, however, since it is a POS.

200 junkmails a week, wow.

Well, what I mean with blocking some adresses: I bring my mails from my Junkmail to my Inbox. There you can block specific emailadresses, or all the adresses ending at ...@xxxxxx.

200 junkmails, I need about a month before I get that  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Frederic

The bad thing about yahoo is that, they are demanding your credit card number! You have to be over 18 to open an account starting from now.  Sad And yes, hotmail is shit. SOmetimes they even deliver junk mail to your inbox!

OK, I get 40 junk mails daily. So that's about 300 a week!

You talking about spam check out AOL! I get spam from them just as I get from Hotmail! The only thing with Hotmail is I usually block the word after the @ symbol(such as @feeeporn.com or some other thing). What I did was that I used the filter and the other stuff and the spam went down! Only thing with AOL is that their own members are doing this to people sending them false stuff about their accounts are messed up and other junk mail. And I also get Instant messages from AIM and AOL users about porno. In conclusion Hotmail has stuff to diminish the spam and AOL doesn't.
