Golden Nugget Hotel

Thu Jun 13, 2002 10:16 pm

Goin' to Vegas again on HP in August. Got 3 nights and air from CMH for $260pp. Not bad. There goes 2 weeks of my paycheck.  Sad

Anyway, have any of you stayed at the Golden Nugget? Your thoughts, comments? Good or bad choice of hotels?

Thanks a lot!

When I went to Vegas in JAN I was at the Flamingo. I went by the Golden Nugget, and while it looked OK, I really feel that the Flamingo was in a better location. What a lot of people don't realize about Vegas is how huge it is. You can't walk from one end of the strip to another, and while the Golden Nugget is on Las Vegas Blvd... it is NOT near major casinos like New York - New York, Bally's, Caesar's, Paris, Harrah's, etc... If I were you I'd spend my nights at an on-strip hotel. I have had GREAT success getting hotels on Hotwire.com. Recently I got the Millenium Knickerbocker in Chicago for only $50 per night. They normally charge over $100 more. If you do have to stay at the Nugget you should fear not as it is near MANY good and old casinos that make up Old-Las Vegas (by the Las Vegas Experience, which is a lot of fun). Citizens Area Transport (CAT) busses run on a regular schedule to the main strip. Have fun.

Yes, I realize it is downtown, but we will be traveling to the Strip for the rest of the day, no big loss.

Look for the largest golden nugget in the world. It's located near the sportsbook area.

I've stayed at the Golden Nugget. It is the best of the downtown hotels, and the gambling, restaurants, etc... are great. Downtown has its own special appeal: it is a place where I go to relax from the strip, its like taking a vacation from your vacation. Plus downtown's 1950s/1960s atmosphere is great, I think it gives you a taste of the old Vegas. In any other place in the world, the Golden Nugget would be considered a top hotel in town - in Vegas its not a top strip hotel so it gets second billing. But, you get more personal service, better prices on everything, shorter lines, cheaper tables, etc...

I now have two Vegas modes. The first is when I go with an out of control gambler friend, and we get a second floor to the top 2 BR suite at Bellagio. Thats the only way to stay on the Strip, IMO, is when you are treated to the front of the line everywhere. The second way I go to Vegas, I stay downtown at GN, or I also like the Horsehoe - its for serious gambling, drinking, and adult fun. No circus acts, no lions, no cirque de solei, but a good casual relaxed time - and a lot more interesting characters hanging around.

kind regards,

It's been awhile, but I've stayed there. Rooms are bigger and better at some the newer hotels but the pool that is in the inside courtyard is very relaxing.
