Drive By Shooting....Sad Sight I Saw Last Night

Fri Jun 14, 2002 6:13 pm

We (my friends and i) were driving back home after clubbing Thursday night here in Boston when we heard this man scream towards us "call the police....call the police".This is in the theather district...right off tremont street. We stopped the car and there was this black guy down...the guy who yelled for help heard 5 or 6 shots being fired. I called 911 and the police and ambulances were there within a couple of minutes. As soon as the police came they questioned and searced some of the people walking around in that vicinity.....
I doubt if the man made it...he seemed nearly dead when we got out of the car....he was not bleeding much but i saw the holes in his jacket.I hope he made it .....i know just how bad and unimaginably painful it can be to get shot..
I have been living here for nearly 3 years now and i have seen nothing like it in Boston.....one can expect something like this more in a city like New York, Los Angeles or Miami maybe ......but we were shocked to see it happen in main Boston.

Damn, that is pretty scary. Did you offer any first-aid to the gunshot victim?

Man i or any of the people in my party had nothing in the form of first aid....by the time i was done with th 911 phone call the police and the ambulance sirens could be heard..like i mentioned before they were there within a couple of minutes and they immediately took him into the medical emergency vehicle..

How do you know how bad and unimaginably painful it is to get shot?

By the way.....South Central LA is the local for a drive by.... Not NY.

Hey Saif,

I sure hope Boston is safe, lol, I'm going to BU remember?  Laugh out loud

Anyway a similar thing happened to me in McGill Center in Montreal. Two men got into a fight about two feet away from me and one pulled out a gun. I could have been hit if he had pulled the trigger. Of course I wasted no time in getting out of the mall ASAP!

My friends Grandmothers house in Compton has Bulletproof steel window shutters in the front at night. In Hawthorne I was 1 block away when I heard gun shots. Some guys had driven by a house and opened up with glocks...it was scary. But stuff like that is happening less and less often in LA...

That's why gun ownership (and the resulting theft of guns and general black market) should be banned in the US.

No point having the freedom to bear arms if you risk getting shot.

Glad I'm not American.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

YYZ717

Excellent point. That is actually one of the reasons that I feel unsure about going to Boston for university as opposed to Toronto or Montreal!

YYZ717... I'm glad you're not American either. Then you'd have the right to vote and that would suck.

Marco... Enjoy college in Canada.... We'll miss ya.

JETPILOT:

And why would he not have the right to vote in Canada?

See, we have Democracy too, and we can read ballots to boot.

"Shocked to see it happen in main Boston???? Huh???  Wow!

I swear, I don't know why people think Boston is soooooooo "safe." (BTW, has anyone seen that series "Boston 24/7" on ABC yet?... Gee, that show sure makes ya wanna stroll down the streets of South Boston at 2 in da morning with all your jewelry and furs on.) It's just too many poor whyte trash there.

Anyway, I don't believe that place has ever been that safe. And just think, I was born there! (And, yes, I DO realize that the Bronx isn't a bowl of fruit either).

Someone get the latest FBI crime statistics Bean Town for me. --I'm too lazy to do it right now.

Zzzzzzzz.

JETPILOT: Just about 2 years ago i was shot myself.....without going into the details of what happened then...i can promise you then it can be a very painful experience...

As far as Boston is concerned as a safe place....well other then a few areas in Boston like Roxbury,Dorchester and China Town...Boston is a pretty safe place...obviously nearly every Metropolis in the world has its share of crime but by in large Boston(with the exception of a few areas) is a safe city.

JETPILOT,

Was that supposed to be sarcastic? What do you believe in communism or something? Are people not allowed to express their opinions? SHEEEEESH!

Saif,

You've been shot? OUCH, well thank God you're alright. Did it happen in Boston or in your home town Karachi?

I don't have the latest FBI statistics, but you should check out http://www.morganquito.com, which ranks U.S. cities in terms of safety. Boston is the 63rd (out of 322) most dangerous city in the U.S. A higher ranking than New York, Ft. Lauderdale or even Los Angeles -- the latter have “reputations” of being dangerous.

As far as safety in Canada is concerned, I grew up there. I personally know three people who were victimized by drive by shootings, and maybe only one of them had some sort of gang affiliation -- his brother was friends with one. I've been mugged in Canada several times -- once at gunpoint. My mom's friend’s husband is a police officer in a major city up there and he tells me that gun/gang violence is a lot more prevalent than commonly perceived. Of course, it could be just me…

Now, I've been living in New York City for just about two years and have been to some pretty "rough" neighborhoods here and in Jersey. Not once has anyone mugged, shot, beat up, or bothered me in any way. And remember, this is supposed to be a dangerous city. But then again, it could also be just me…

And Tony, I don't think the Bronx is that bad. I actually like the Bronx and wouldn't mind living there. I can get a brand new or recently renovated apartment for about the same price and maybe even lower than what I pay for my place in Queens. The Bronx booming right now. Even areas like Morrisania and Hunts Point are turning it around.

KHI747: That's an excellent attitude! Most places have their problem areas and violence is certainly not immune anywhere.

I'm not surprised it happened in Boston. Don't get me wrong, Boston is a great city, but it is a large one too. Every large city has violent crime, some have less than others, for instance, cities like Los Angeles and Detroit have more than average. Boston has about an average crime rate for a major city. The theater district is not to far from Roxbury, which is one of the worst parts of the city, so it does not suprise me it happened there.
