S. Korea In World Cup '02(opinions Please)

Sat Jun 22, 2002 11:48 pm

Am I the only one who thinks S. Korea has gone so far due to the fact that the refs have pretty much made the games all one sided(combined with the crowd)? It seems like in every game there has been at least 1 red card awarded to the other team, and in Spain's case; not one, but two goals disallowed for the tiniest of reasons(and in some cases, I disagreed with the refs).

vs. Portugal- 2 red cards. The first one was understandable, but the second wasn't.

vs.Italy- 1 red card. Was it really that bad?

vs. Spain- 2 disallowed goals. Both of those goals and the way they happened were fair enough for me to call them goals.

Is it me, or does it seem as if the refs are calling one sided games in favor of the Koreans??

I would like to hear your opinions on this. I for one think(and in some cases, know) if the refs had made a different decision, Korea would have been out a long time ago. Korea should be out now, but obviously they aren't, and I think it is a fair bet that the refs will make some biased calls against Germany and hand S. Korea the game.

How do you feel about this?

I dunno. The US managed not to get a Red Card.

That one seemed to be a very equal game.

It seems to me. as a neutral that the ref's have been told to allow Korea to win if possible as some of the decisions have been SHOCKING to say the least. Portugal, Italy and Spain should all have beaten S.Korea!

I totally agree with Blink.

I also noticed that Korea missed penalties against US and Italy, but scored all 5 in the PSO vs Spain.

I really dont understand the whinning about South korea's successes. Is it because they did not only beat Portugal but also Italy and Spain, wich are all so called football nations, that football fans all over the world feel threatend by this tiny Asian football nation?

Now I would like to hear a good reason why the referees would favor South Korea and not Japan. Japan being, just like South Korea a host country. In fact Japan would be far more interesting to favour as the population is bigger aswell as the economie. Atleast that's what some of you might assume, that it's all about money. But Japan stranded in the second round.

As L-188 mentioned no red cards at the US game. Remember it was Portugals Figo who proposed to the South Koreans, at half time of their game, to draw. So Portugal and South Korea would continue.

Also, the only referee send away from the WorldCup so far was Peter Prenderhard of Jamaica. If the referees involved in South koreas game where that obviously biased towards South Korea the FIFA would have taken the same action against them.

It is my believe that merely due to the fact of the many fouls commited by South Koreas opponents and the big surprise that the South Koreans learned how to play football just like any other established football nation that South Korea came this far.

To be continued on tuesday, but I would suggest to refrain from whinning beforehand how the referees are going to favor South Korea again. Afterall germany had it's fair share of luck aswell this WorldCup, so South Korea might have to share that bit.

Let the best team win this World Cup, wherever they might come from, but in case your team loses take it as a Sportsman and not like a chiken.

Mas a330,

That's true about the penaltys. to my big and good surpride I noticed that they must have trained a lot since they scored all 5 of them. But be honest, you're not assuming that the Spanish sold the game or that the football contained some sophisticated Korean electronics  Smile  Smile  Smile ... Are you?

Well if the officials and FIFA are favoring South Korea, I see it only for one simple reason: they want to keep up the revenue. With S. Korea still in it, their fans will fill up the stadiums whereas other games (notably Germany-USA are barely half full.

More of a business strategy I think, which is horrible considering that the "playing field" is one that is definitely uneven.

Does anybody else tend to think that the referees have been a bit shady in this World Cup? I mean, granted they are human, but some of the non-calls, specifically the German handball in their game against the US, have been a major factor. I also saw how they discounted one of Spain's goals because the linesman ruled the ball was over the line, but on replays it clearly wasn't over the endline.

The handball was no penalty. The ref made the right decision.

But if you see what happened to Italy and Spain vs. Korea, it's simply strange that ALL "mistakes" the referees make are in favour of Korea. Legal goals are disallowed, non-offsides are ruled as offsides, players are sent off and goalkeepers save penalties by stepping out of their goal altough they have to stay on the line. Sorry, but it's simply very strange, and I think without the strange decisions both Italy and Spain would have won their games.

US330-
Regarding the US-Germany game, the officiating was a bit more decent if you ask me(but nowhere near average and much less than perfect), but Christian Ziege could have gotten away with murder if he wanted to.

Manni-
The reason S. Korea turned down the draw was because they knew Portugal was beatable if they got 2 red cards(1 which wasn't even deserved) and also if Portugal beat Germany(assuming they beat Mexico), S. Korea knows that Portugal could kick their a$$es without referees rigging the game  Acting devilish.

Blink182,

Remeber why Portugal got that red card? After recieving the red card Jao Pinto hit the referee, therefore he is expelled for 2 years. It wasn't the first time Portugal got his ass kicked, remember the game against the US? With the US being kicked her ass by Poland South Korea could even afford themselfes to loose and still qualify for the next round, also the referee knows that. While you keep whinning about how unfair you might think this all is I'm going to celebrate South Korea's victory with a nice botlle Spanish wine. Big grin

SOuth Korea played well, however the first goal, the header from Morientes shoudl have been a goal there was absolutely for it to be disqualified.

It also amazes me how Ahn missed a penalty in the game against the USA and then he missed ANOTHER penalty against Italy and then he goes on to score in the game against Spain. Korea must have been practising penalties an awful lot since the game V Italy!

About penalties...

Korea has the only domestic soccer league (AFAIK) that decides its regular season tie games with penalty kicks. Yes, all these players have been in such situation for years. They missed two, but it's the ones that have gone in that count. Interesting stat for WJ Lee (Goalkeeper)--- he has never lost a game that went to penalties.

One has got to give it to Korea,I mean they came top of their group and took on Italy and Spain and in both cases took them to extra time. There may have been some shady cases foul play, but in the end its not the Koreans fault. Its really the fault of all those so called "big" teams like Spain,Argentina,France and Italy who think they are the gods of football and all they need to is to turn up to reserve a place in the next round. If they think their so damn bloody good then they should be putting countless of balls in the back of the net.France did not even score a single goal! What about when Korea beat Scotland 4-0?I did not hear any shouts of corruption there. But when Korea beat Italy, the Italians are shouting blue murder left right centre and then Ahns club sacks him and then the Italians have the audacity to say that Korea bribed the officals and this comment is coming from a country that is perhaps the most corrupt in the EU.Or is it really because these soccer "gods" with their long flowing hair and muscles the size of the collosseum cant fathom the thought of small, yellow people with buck teeth beating them at their own game?Thats what I think it is!

ps.If there is corruption than howcome Japan are also out and howcome that stupid "Hand of Satan" or the third Geoff Hurst goal in the 1966 final were not put down to bribed officials?

It is amazing that anyone can think that S.Korea is better or at the same level as the main European teams. The Koreans are no doubt hardworking and enthusiastic guys, buy they have needed super extra help to get to the semifinals. The match yesterday was unbelievable, not only for the two legal goals scored by Spain; in the extra time there were at least three inexistent offsides in Spain's counterattacks.
Well I guess that this was the first Asian WC, and FIFA wanted an Asian team in the Top Four.

The most shocking foul was by the Mexican player who did a Kung fu kick on a USA player in the Mexico-US game, the guy almost assaulted the other player! Embarrassment

Rightfully sent off

I don't want to talk about referees but I think that South Korea and Japan, both played very well and I would love to see Japan still playing  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Isn't there just a problem for the big teams loosing against a unknown and not respected Asian team?

The Koreans played well but not well enough to beat Italy or Spain. The referees are clearly favoring the Koreans. The Koreans would have been long gone by now if the referees were only fair.

I think it is strange that if it happens to South Korea, why not to Japan as well.

I find everything quite strange what happens, but nevertheless Korea is in good shape at the event, they didn't only win because of luc. And red cards are not really that much a reason of loosing a game, it happens often that teams with less players play better (there are less people so the remaining do more their best), look at Brazil or Germany.

I think Spain had bad luck with those 2 goals, the first one should be in, the second one may have been stopped without a wissle disturbing everything. But Italy (shouting about that complot) is complaining about nothing, they have lost that game due to their own gameplay. Besides the amount of dubious goals is very high and not only in the matches against Korea.

As much as the referee's decisions might have gone against Italy, they would still have won were it not for Christian Vieri making an appalling hash of a golden opportunity that most grannies could have scored.

Or are they suggesting Vieri was deliberately doped or something?  Yeah sure

OO-VEG,

Agreed, not only in the match against Korea. But when it happens in a match involving Brazilie, nobody says a word cause hey "they are a good team". This all coincides with South Koreas successes, so why not make it fake successes. Disgusting attitude of the so called big football nations. Once again congratulations to South Korea.

Manni- The reason people act differently about Brazil is because Brazil is expected to play well. Last time I checked, the last two World Cups saw Brazil make it to the championship, and in '94, Brazil won.

Am I shocked that S. Korea won a match? No. Am I shocked though that they have gone this far, at the expense of refs giving them an advantage over other teams? Yes.

Due to the fact that the official ticket agency of World Cup '02 messed up badly, the refs are probably trying to get as many people there as possible and with Korea being a host country, they are the easiest to do it to.

Blink,

You say exactely what I've said. People expect Brasil to play well, so it's OK when the refs are on their side. South Korea is never been strong before, now they are, so it must be fraud amongst thee referee. Things change, the skill of playing football is not such a thing you can inherrit from previous generations.
