Cure For Asthma?

Sun Jun 23, 2002 10:16 pm

Hey everyone,

Everyone has been saying that there's no cure for asthma, you can only prevent it. Is there really no cure?

Cheers,

Alvin, I don't believe there's a cure. A cousin of mine just died from an asthma attack, because she didn't have her spray handy. My uncle also died from it in the 60's on the way to the hospital to get a shot while having an asthma attack.

I'm very worried. My dad has some pretty bad asthma and needs the spray everywhere he goes and he can't afford to have a cough. When the cough comes he needs the machine to help breathing.

Thanks,

No, cureable not yet. With proper controlling medication, Asthma can have a negligable impact on the lives of those who suffer from it. With Albuterol / Ventolin and Flovent inhalers, I live a normal unaffected life. So many others are far less fortunate, having much more severe conditions which require regular use of a nebulizer and possibly oxygen.

I don't believe Asthma is always preventable either.

I had Asthma as a child. I had terrible attacks. They were always in the middle of the night. I'd wake up unable to breathe and gasping desperately for air. My parents would wake up and rush in my room. They'd get me out of bed, calm me down and usually my pathways would clear enough to breathe comfortably in a few minutes. Frightening for all involved. From my understanding, there is no prevention, nor cure. My asthma was allergy related and I eventually 'grew out of it'. I just stopped having attacks at around 10 years old.

when i was a kid, i had an asthma attack and always needed my Pulmicort. Until when i was 11, this new English medicine came out so my doctor just grabbed some for me to try. it worked! and ever since, I have improved significantly. It is not a cure but to protect your lungs... it is called Singulair.

It is a montelukast sodium. try searching Yahoo! and you get tons of info on it. but dono if it works for adult, sorry to hear that mr. BA. Mr. BA, some of my elderly Chinese relatives, recommended that to try crocodile's flesh for ppl with asthma. Dono if it works but u might wanna find out abt it.

My mother has asthma...sadly, it is only a disease that can be managed, not cured. It does have one advantage: my allergies are so severe that my allergist has forbidden me from doing any yard work or painting work.  Big thumbs up (In order to keep me from becoming asthmatic...)

I use the Montelukast sodium, the drug is called "Singulair" in most parts of the world. Although I'm not asthmatic, I have "alergic renitis" which makes it difficult to breath when you are exposed to things you are alergic to. Singulair is a pill that you take once daily and it opens your lungs and prevents asthma attacks. Montelukast sodium was discovered in the MRL laboratories of Merck (MSD) located in Great Britain.

I discovered Singulair when I started working for Merck & Co. the owner of the patent and the manufacturer and distributor of the drug. First I didn´t want to change from Claritin D to Singulair, because my doctor didn't know Singulair, but I went to another doctor, he prescribed me Singulair and it worked really well.

Anyway, if you want to know more about Singulair, try talking with your doctor, he will evaluate your condition and give you the best advice. You can also find more on our global website:

I have asthma and it really doesn't affect me at all. It only acts up when I have a cold or bad allergies. I have flovent and albuterol, but I only take it when needed. Yesterday, to be cautious, they made me take my inhalers before they put me out to take my wisdom teeth out. My jaw is still huge...oh well.

Alvin, however much you love your dad, don't try and solve this by yourself! Talk to the doctors at the hospital, and to your dad's doctor, and get proper medical advice. It may be that there could be complications or other factors. I know you are very worried, and if you still want to do something more, see a reliable naturopath, some of them can be extremely helpful.
But get professional advice, and good luck.

Airbus Lover:

Singulair works for people from 2 years old to adults. For children it is a chewing pill with a raspberry flavor, for adults it is a normal pill that you swallow.

Singulair 4Mg (For children)
Singulair 5Mg
Singulair 10Mg

Another thing you guys can try is getting a Chihuahua dog. These types of dogs are good with asthma. Don't ask me why but my cousin got one and as far as I know, she hasn't had an attack in years.
