Which State Do "the Simpsons" Live In?

Tue Jun 25, 2002 8:09 am

There are about 23 Springfields in the USA, which state do the simpsons live in? I think it's on the east coast....I almost want to say New Hampshire or somewhere in the N.E. They've almost said it on a few episodes, but I don't think they ever have. Any clue???

The running joke on "The Simpsons" is the fact that they never identify which state Springfield is in. That way, they can change geographical features to suit the story (i.e. one episode they live near "Mt. Springfield", the next episode they live near the ocean).

In one episode, Marge is leaving her address information on the phone, and she says "713 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, Oh hiya Maude!" (and Maude Flanders walks in).

Basically they live in Springfield, USA.

its irrelevant what state they live in, they are an average american family, who live in an average american city in some average american state making an average american income.

In one episode they showed Homers social security number, and the prefix on his SC number was the kind they give out in California. That gave me evidence to suggest they live in California, until one episode where they talk about West Springfield, which they say is 3 times the size of Texas! Which rules out the possibility of them living anywhere in the world. So I guess we will never know.

In the "Behind the Laughter" episode, they came out and said "This northern Kentucky family..." There happens to be a Springfield, KY, a Simpsonville, KY and a Shelbyville, KY. I don't buy it as admitting where they live though. I don't think there's any specific state where they live.

In the "Behind the Laughter" episode, they came out and said "This northern Kentucky family Yes, but when they replayed the episode, it said "this Northern Missouri family.." And then "Southern Missouri", so who knows? I would guess a State that does not really exsist.

In the episode where they go to Brazil the little boy they're looking for says that he was going to write but he didn't know what state they lived in. Then Lisa said it was a mystery but you can figure it out if you look at the clues.

Okay, I think I know where they might live, Northern California. Think about it, the social security number thing Beefmoney was talking about, it's near the mountains, near the ocean, similar to New England landscape, it's Northern California.

Honestly, it's not Northern California. (Especially if you saw the whole "West Springfield" episode where they talked about how huge it was).

I repeat: The place they live is not a real state.

Ok guys, I've analyzed this question for the past few years now, and I'm convinced the Simpsons live on the west coast, with a good probability of it being California. I'm not saying this is the state the writers had in mind, but all the clues and references they've used over the years, although vague, pretty much point to a west coast environment.

California would work, except it's way to temperate for all the snow and cold temps the Simpsons get each winter.

Maybe the mid-atlantic states? It's fairly close drive to the ocean, to "Capital City" (New York), there are mountains within easy reach (Appalachians, a few others), and there is quite a concentration of nuclear facilities--Monty Burns could set up shop easily.

Cheers.

I am convinced the Simpsons live in Massachusetts. Why? Well remeber when George Bush moved in across the street? Well any way, Homer was upset and said "why can't he live in his home state?". Lisa then responded "this is his home state". I looked up which is his home state and it turns out to be Massachusetts.

Also, rememeber when they went to that 50s style restaurant that closed a day later? Any way, each table was the shape of a state, and the Simpsons sat at the table shapped like Massachusetts!

OK, then when Baldwin / Basinger moved in why did Homer ask why they didn't move to Bethesda? Springfield and Bethesda are both suburbs of DC. You cannot pinpoint one Springfield.

I think they live on the south coast, like in Texas, or somewhere. You see in one episode with the billion dollar cheque, they fly to cuba, so I think they live down there. and that would explain when they go to the ogdenville mall, all the arrid landscape they drive through.

And how often does it rain in springfield? Not alot!

I was gonna say Kentucky, because of the "Behind the Laughter" episode. And that still might work. However, I think Massachussetts is a good answer and because of Quimby. Missouri isn't it because of the episode where Lisa cheats and "Supernintendo" Chalmers tells her that Springfield elementary was moved from MO brick by brick.

But remember, they've got to be within driving distance of Las Vegas, and train-riding distance of Delaware.

And they have to be on the ocean. That eliminates Kentucky AND Missouri. Sorry, it can't be Texas. It snows in Springfield too often (and they live near mountains).

Springfield = USA.

What about MTV's series Daria? (It no longer airs).

They lived in "Lawndale." Could this be the same Lawndale of suburban Los Angeles? Or was it Lawndale, somewhere else? They never said it.

And how about the Flintstones? What state was "Bedrock" in? Notice how Fred, a lot of the receptionists, and some other guest characters all had that sterotypical New York & Brooklyn accent? Yet you always see palmtrees in the background when he and Barney go driving somewhere. We don't have palmtrees in New York. (Maybe we did millions of years ago, I guess).

So what do we have?

Somewhere v. cold in winter (that name again is Mr Plow)
Somewhere v. hot in summer (The 'new swimming pool' episode)
Mountains v. close by (Mount Springfield, anyone?)
Coast v. close by (Various episodes. Y'arrrrrr.)
West Springfield (3 times the size of Texas...with oil fields)
Within driving distance of both Capitol City and NYC.
Big enough to merit own international airport and Who concerts
Small enough to need a monorail to put it on the map (just like Ogdenville, North Haverbrook and Brockway)

Well, I'm no nearer an answer  Big grin

I originally said Northern California, but I thought about it and that can't be true. The only thing that keeps from determening a state the Simpsons live in is West Springfield being 3 times the size of Texas. It could be Massachusetts too, we have a rather good sized city named Springfield in Massachusetts. I think they make refrence to several different Springfields across the country to confuse people.

I love it when Super "Nintendo"  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Chalmers comes to Springfield Elementary and says, "Yeah, this school was once threatened to close down by the state of Illinois.......That's why it was moved brick by brick to this state." I think that's how it goes! I don't think it's Massachusetts, because remember when they wen't to Japan, and they got stuck at the Massachusetts table at America Town, and Homer said, "Why did we get stuck at Taxachusetts? You know I once knew a man from Nantucket....." Why would he talk about the state he lives in like that!? I have no idea, but for sure it is just a joke that is going to continue on forever, kinda like we will never see Maggie grow up as the episodes progress!

Ok, there is one episode, I don't remember which one, but they show a map of the world and from the United States and put a dot by Springfield, which is located somewhere on the Gulf Coast, presumably Louisiana.

Also, I seem to be one of the few people that has the Simpsons computer game, Virtual Springfield. One of the things you can do is look in Homer's mailbox and it clearly shows the Simpson's address as being:

Homer J. Simpson
742 Evergreen Terrace
Springfield, N.T., 49007

So there you go.

Forget about the '3 times the size of Texas' thing. That has nothing to do with geography. Just a ploy to throw you off. 'West Springfield' has 15 letters in it (three times the size of 'Texas').

The most logical place would be in Illinois. Both Springfield and their rival Shelbyville are in that state. So there is your answer.

JetService- LOL! I didn't notice that about the letters in W. Springfield!

Continental- We do see an image of Maggie in the future. I don't know what episode, but it takes place in the future, because Marge & Homer have aged somewhat. In the quick scene "Future Maggie" is in, she is tying up the phone line & smoking, wearing a leather jacket & appears to be about 17 years old.

Following the point that Seven_Fifty7 started, in "Beavis & Butt-Head", they lived in Highland, (Daria's hometown before she moved to Lawndale), but the state is never named. I think this is intentional.

As for my input, I think either Massachusetts or California, because it's near the water & has mountains, but we'll probably never know.

Matt Groening was from the Pacific Northwest.

There was some discussions about him baseing the powerplant on the now closed Trojan powerplant on the Colombia river.

Lets see here you need mountains, access to an ocean, desert close by, and farmlands.

I vote for Portland, Oregon, lots of mountains in the Cascades, On the west side of them by the Dalles, Up toward Moses Lake, That was originally desert. Fairly close to the river, and the town was supplied by power from the Trojan plant.

Besides, It is only a five hour drive to the naval yard at Bremmerton, WA.

I am well aware of that episode. But out of the hundreds of episodes, Maggie has not grown-up one bit! The Simpsons also make it clear of the states they don't live in, like Alaska and Hawaii are where they don't live for sure, remember when Homer was a pilot, and he got offered free tickets to anywhere in the U.S. besides Hawaii and Alaska, and Lisa and Bart ask to go to those states! I also think it's hilarious, once there was a beach right across the street from the Simpsons house, and there was also a jail in the backyard, as well as the nuclear plant next door! HAHA, I love the Simpsons, they're on in 25 min here in MN!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I've always "felt" that they were mid-westerners or northerners, however, regardless of where Springfield is, it's airport seems to be second to none in terms of direct international flights. If I recall correctly, in the episode where Apu's mother comes to visit from India, Lisa wonders if she will be coming in on the 10:00, 10;15, or 10:30 flight.....I can't recall the exact times, but three flights from India in half an hour !!!

Hi, here's another clue:
Remember when Monty Burns opened the ingeniously namend "Monty Burns Casino" in Springfield? Isn't gambling illegal in most US States except for Nevada and New Jersey? Now this would seriously limit the potential number of states...

Or am I missing something here?
