Yup, they sure are.

Right now I live in the US, and they have been prattling on about this new "Supercar" for like a month. The only problem is GeneralM has a history of making fabulous concept autos, & and then severely watering them down (like I would not be at all surpirised to see that this GTO will just be Pontiac --America's Opel, I guess-- next gen of the Grand Prix coupe, still w/ just 6cyl & 240hp. After all, the last Pontiac GP was supposed to be this monster supercar as well, & I can easily bury one with a Honda Civic

Cheers

It is the real deal.

It is based on the Holden (GM Australia) Monaro. Powered by a GEN III 5.7l V8 producing some 300+ hp. With your choice of a 4spd auto or a 6spd manual. Not to mention that this is also a true rear-driver. This is Bob Lutz's first project to go into production, so it should be pretty good. Though I still think the styling should depart more from the current corporate Pontiac look of melted plastic body cladding. From the reviews I have read of the Holden Monaro GT the platform is pretty solid and goes fast.

Normally I would agree....but GM may actually do this one right (for a change) because the upcoming 2004 GTO will be have virtually nothing in common with current Pontiacs (no FWD and wheezing V-6) ..it will be a North American version of the Holden Monaro, built by GM's Australian subsidiary. The Monaro is basically a two-door Cadillac Catera/Opel Omega (a RWD platform) with the (albeit slightly detuned) 5.7 Liter LS1 V-8 and available six-speed MANUAL transmission from the Corvette. According to Car and Driver magazine, the Aussie version is rated @ 302HP & 339 lb./ft. of torque, with 0-62mph times at 6.6 secs...not too shabby for a 3600lb car. Also on the plus side, new GM bigwig Bob Lutz has issued an edict that this and all future Pontiacs due away with their trademark hideous plastic body cladding. See this link:

its not the ugliest thing i've ever seen (the new one) but i LOVE the stacked headlights. what was the other Pontiac car with stacked heads?
GTO is also one of the coolest names for a car cuz it means something unlike some other car names.

I just hope that General Motors brings back the Camaro and preserves the V8/rear-wheel drive platform...

To bad the Impala SS was destroyed by putting a V6 in it. What a shame. Now it looks like Mercury is taking up with slack with the Marauder. A true muscle car. Based on the Grand Marquis body, but tuned up, big engine..TRUE dual exhaust. It looks pretty hot. Here is the website on it.

At least it beats those crappy little rice rockets that scream down the street. Sorry....a little wimpy aluminum 4 banger with a tin can for a muffler just does NOT cut it. Give me a big block 454 any day. Now that sounds good.  Smile

Great looking car. It doesn't have all that body cladding like all other Potiacs do (especially Aztec). I read an article a while back that GM was thinking about building a 4 door sports sedan much like the 94-96 Impala. If I remember correctly, it was also supposed to be based on the Holden Monaro. Maybe GM decided to build the GTO instead. It doesn't matter, either one would be cool. I also read that since GM may be putting V8s and rear drive in some of their new cars, the 3800 V6 in the front-drive cars may be bumped up to 280hp. (!!!!) Anyhow, that's a little bit of tid-bit I thought I'd mention.

Its just that its a 6.....even if its a 300pony V6....it just doesn't have the rumble of V8....even the tingy alliuminum ones. Personally....the Lincoln Towncar is a pretty good hot rod for being as heavy as it is. The Caddy Sedan De Villes are good too....0-60 in 7secs is pretty good for a big car. I did that on the Strand in Coronado at 0300. Talk about fun.

Leftypilot79, the GTO does have a V8. It's a 5.7 (around 350ci).
Personally, it's the only decent car (excluding Camaro, Firebird, and Cattera) that GM has designed in a while. But I guess we will have to see how it actually appears when built. Artists rendering and that kinda stuff always looks better than the car does in real life.
Anyhow, that's all.

Sorry I have to disagree. The best American cars are being build in Wixom, Michigan. (Lincolns that is)  Smile

This car may haul ass but it still looks like another run of the mill GM mid-size coupe.
