Laptop Computers

Mon Jul 01, 2002 1:17 pm

Hey Guys, looks like I will be buying a new (laptop) computer within the next few weeks. I have a general idea of what I want, but there are so many choices that its hard to even begin to narrow the selection down.

I'd like to know what you think about Compaq, HP, IBM, Toshiba, Sony, and Dell models. Any experiences would be awesome  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In fact, if some of you know much about computers, I'd love if you could help me out... I'm looking for something with 1.1Ghz+ (anything is alright but a Celeron), 20gb+ harddrive, 256mb+ ram, DVD/CDRW drive, Ethernet, USB 2.0, and Firewire (IEEE 1394) capability. Basic XGA screen is fine, would like good battery life. Size/mobility is one of the most important considerations. I'd like it to be light and reasonably small, but not tiny. Not looking to spend more than $1800.

Thanks much!  Big thumbs up

This has been done a few times, so I'll do it again....

Titanium G4 PowerBook

I have one and love it.

May be over your $1800 price range. If so, the iBook also gives you all you ask for above. Even gives you a bonus (Mac OSX)

HP ZT series.

If you don't play games, you will not be disappointed.

Best looking Windows machine around, too. Go see it at Best Buy and configure your dream machine to order.

Had mine for 6 months now... built like a brick.

I have a Sony Vaio and would highly recommend it; it's a great design and built really well. A few months ago, I dropped it on a marble floor -- it didn't even get scratched!

There are a number of different Vaio models; here's what one of them looks like:

I'm on my second Sony Vaio and would definitely get a third. Excellent customer service for when things do go wrong as well!!

I own both an IBM ThinkPad and a Toshiba Satellite. I love both to death. If you're looking for really long battery life, get the ThinkPad--you can put a 2nd battery in the UltraBay for 5-6 hours of battery life. I've dropped both onto my terrazo floors (quite by accident-I assure you!) and both survived with no problems. However, I believe that the only PC (i.e. Windows/Intel) laptop available with internal FireWire is the Vaio--also a good machine.

I have two dell laptops, and love them both

Dell Latitude PIII-850
512 MB Ram
20gb hd
ethernet / modem
dvd / cdrw

etc etc

If you go to dells main page, and then follow signs for the factory outlet, you can get refurbs (in most cases, the computer has never actually been touched by anyone, not even out of the box, yet as it is not its first sale, it cannot be sold as new)

I bought my laptop about 6 months ago for 850 dollars, when it was retailing from dell at 2400 dollars...oh the joys of refurb

Well, from the looks of it, one would assume no matter what I chose I would not be disappointed. I think I've narrowed it down to the Sony Viao R505EL, HP zt series (1155 or 1175) and the Compaq Presario (1500 or 2800). To get one that met all my requirements and was in the physical size range I'm looking for would be beyond my price range with the other brands.

I'd love any specific info about the above mentioned models. But, in the mean time, off to Compusa and Best Buy to do some researching!  Big thumbs up

I've got a super lite NEC LaVie NX that I bought in Japan. It cost me about $3000 and worth it. Planning to purchase a Sony Vaio very soon.

My dad just bought a TOSHIBA a week agao and it kicks ass. It has CDRW/DVD Combo drive, 40gb hard drive, Pentium 4 at 1.7, firewire, and a Ethernet card.

Its a TOSHIBA SATELLITE 5105-S501...he bought it for about $2,000 at BestBuy, but im sure that you can find it online for less.

My dad has a Dell Latitude lap top as well. He got it refurbished. He hasn't had a single bit of trouble with it, and he has had it for 4 years. He did have a small plastic piece brake off, and Dell sent out a tech over to out house to fix it (we are 20 miles from the nearest town too).
Have fun.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hey guys, I'm almost 100% sure I'm going to get a Compaq Presario 1500T. Seems like it best fits my needs and price range. Any comments on this computer?

I like the 2800T, unfortunately, quite a few people I know who I value their opinion say no to Compaq. There's always something  Sad.

The Toshibas seem cool. Give their site a try.

Well, I just bought the Compaq, hopefully I didn't make a mistake! Should arrive in about 2 weeks...

Whatever you do, don't buy Compaq ... I have several friends that have had them in the past who say that their after sales service stinks; that they have constant problems with software that they don't have with other systems; that they are clunky and slower than their competitors.
