Home Gyms...

Tue Jul 02, 2002 7:29 am

Should I get one? Are the worth it? I haven't been so active lately and I'm pretty out of shape. There's a gym about 10 blocks from my house, but it's always crowded and I'd prefer the convenience of working out at home. Do any of you have home gyms? Which ones do you have? Do you like them? Which would you recommend me getting? I'm looking at the Total Gym and the Bowflex models. Total Gym seems so-so, but it's really compact and convenient. Bowflex, on the other hand, seems amazing, but is grossly overpriced. I’m also considering getting a set of weights and a bench. Problem is that I don’t have that much room in my apartment. Are there any other models/alternatives I should consider? Thanx!

I'd say forget about home gyms. The problem with them is that you guy this expensive piece of equipment and you work out religiously for the next 3 or so months. Then slowly you begin to lose your excitement, afterwhich the machine gets relagated to some obscure corner in the basement never to be seen again. Going to a real gym is better in that you're constantly being motivated by the people around you. I should know, I bought one of these contraptions and to be honest, right now I probably wouldn't be able to tell you where I put it.

No avoid home gyms, I have found that they don't give the workout you would get with a total gym such as Bally Total Fitness or the YMCA. I think that if you have the money to spend on a home gym, then use it to buy a membership at a nice gym with good equipment. But if you have to get a home gym then don't settle for anything less then the stuff that is at your local gym. Those multi machines suck. You would need Free weights, incline bench, flat bench, a cable machine, a dip machine, a decline bench, a bar, a preacher bench with bar and the list goes on. Those all in one gym machines do not give a very good workout at all so save it for a membership.  Smile

i agree with hepkat, theres a ton of more motivation at the gym then alone at home.

try going at off peak hours, maybe early in the morning, if your schedule permits.

Previously, I held the same views as most of you concerning home gyms - forget 'em & stick with the neighbor hood gym. Then I took an expensive chance & bought a BowFlex. That was a over a year ago & I still use it every other day. This thing rocks! Most of the other machines I've seen & worked out with were built like crap but this thing is a really well built & designed machine (Check my profile, I know what I'm talking about). Nothing has broken, worn out or otherwise deteriorated since I fist put it together. I know I'm starting to sound like a commercial, but definite kudos are deserved here.

One suggestion, skip the leg machine attachment but don't skip the pull down attachment.
