Germany lost the final match mostly because of a mistake of its best player, Herr Kahn.
Beware Germans! Your team is dangerously starting to behave as Spain, which has a long tradition of the best player blowing it in decisive matches:
Cardeñosa in '78, Arconada in Europe Cup '84, Zubi in '98, Raul in Europe Cup 2000, and in this WC Joaquin failed the decisive penalty against Korea...

Anyway congratulations Ollie, no doubt he is a great goalkeeper !!

Kahn made a mistake, yes. But the brazilian goal was not only his fault. Hamann lost the ball shortly before, and Kahn was injured after Ronaldo stepped on his hand 5 minutes before the goal (he can't play fpr 6 weeks). Kahn has already shown that he has the nerves to decide a final FOR his team. (CL '01)

Such is the tragic of the goalkeeper - he can be brilliant throughout a whole match (or tournament in this case) - one single mistake destroys everything. I was thinking about Harald Schumacher all the time before the final (i.e. BEFORE Rethy Béla mentioned it) - we even discussed this while sitting in front of the TV during the match itself - if Kahn will be beaten, it will be by a massive blunder of his. Could we know how cruelly we would be proven right... :-(

P.S.: If he was hurt and he knew it, why didn´t he had himself substituted? That´s part of greatness too, knowing when one can´t be of service to the team any more.

Well, even an injured Kahn is better than a healthy Lehmann, I guess  Big grin

I'm with Blink182, he absolutely deserved it. Germany are not a great side, and even with a relatively easy route to the final, they would not have made it without him. Of course, this makes it even more ironic that the first mistake he made all tournament gifted Brazil their first goal. I actually feel a bit sorry for him about that.

By the way, isn't he the first goalkeeper ever to win this award?

Can't rely on one player to win a tournement. He can't keep having clean sheets forever, and it was unlucky that it was against the strongest team in the tournement that his luck finally ran out.

Racko, I rarely read your comments all the way through, since you are clearly an ignorant boorish German wearing lederhosen and having no sense of humour...  Big grin

Oh, OK, I'll admit I should have noticed it first time! Big grin
