Holland, What Have You Done?

Fri Jul 05, 2002 10:12 pm

Now and then I feel the urge to go to Amsterdam to relax and indulge in a pleasure I sadly can not find where I live  Wink/being sarcastic
I usually go to a place where I know I can find a good selection to choose from. All different colors and flavors you know..
Now I hear my favorite is gone!?
What happened to BLANKE VLA ???
Has it been discontinued? Say it isn't so!

No it has not been discontinued, some brands still sell it.
But demand is low, so few stores still carry it.

I'm glad to hear it still exists!
Do you know if this brand is still producing it?

OOOOOOOOh I really like Blanke vla. Dubbelvla is good to, but the flavors always get mixed up.

Anyways.. I work at Alberth Heijn (yeah I know.. but a Student can't live solely from the sponsorship of his parents) and we still sell Blanke vla.. so just look around because it has got to be there. Quit searching for Melkunie, the company merged with Campina and now carries that name (Campina that is). I don't know if they still sell blanke vla, but Albert Heijn does with its own brand.

So look for this one:

How about hopjes vla? I used to like that. Haven't had it in ages.
Live in Guernsey at the moment. No proper vla for sale here. Just yoghurt.
Have to import some I guess.

If it was any thinner, it'd be milkshake.

Am i the only person who, has it in a (breakfast) bowl and eats with a table spoon?

We always chug it down straight out of the carton! Breakfast/lunch/snack
whatever!  Love I'm always ready for a Blanke Vla!
Sinasappel or..(orange) is great too!!  Big thumbs up

So Melkunie is gone ? Does Campina taste the same?

Do I have it correct that this "vla" you're talking about is a drinkable custard?

I guess you could call it something like that. It's hard to describe.
Great stuff anyway!

Yeah, but can you give a better description to those unfortunate souls that have never had the pleasure of tasting this nectar straight from heaven?

hehe. It's about the consistency of runny custard, but with a creamier taste.
A bit like yoghurt but not sour.
You can drink it, but that leaves some sticking to the walls of your cup needing a spoon to get it out (or a prehensile tongue to lick it).

Vla: a thick, fluid, cold custard pudding made mainly from milk and offered in a variety of tastes ranging from vanilla and chocolate to strawberry.

Too bad you can't get it in North America...at least I don't think so. The only thing that is odd about it is the packaging. It comes in a carton instead of a container with a large lid. You end up with wasted VLA at the bottom of the carton. So much for "good to the last drop"!
