El Tel Goes To Leeds

Mon Jul 08, 2002 8:52 pm

A great (the greatest?) manager goes to a great club. Good luck to Terry Venables and Leeds United!
I hope he's able to prove to the FA that he was the best choice for the England job.

This is just a short term appointment by Leeds. They couldn't get the person they wanted so Venables will tide them over until someone else is available. If they were serious they would have offered him a longer contract.

I quite agree; in 1 year's time, Martin O'Neill will make the journey south. In the meantime, I hope Venables "does the job".
And no, I'm not a Leeds fan!

Martin O'Neil wont leave Celtic
Even though it would be a step up in league terms, it would be a BIG step down in club terms.

I'm not sure if Venables will be able to do a 'Middlesbro' with Leeds, he saved boro from relagation, but with Leeds, the demands are higher. So what are they looking at El tel to do? trophy or not?

Only time will tell whether O'Neil moves.....

My guess is that Ridsdale will expect a Champions League spot at the very least!

Finally starting to admit defeat Kirky  Big thumbs up Seriously though,Leeds aren't in the best of situations due to the financies.Robbie Keane turning down a move to Sunderland didn't help Leeds' plans to off-load some players this off-season and improve their financial position.A Champion's League spot is a must next year.

Well, the English league is better quality than Scottish, but the only teams in England that are "maybe" bigger than Rangers or Celtic is Manchester United and Liverpool. But, note I said maybe.

GKirk - Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal are all way bigger than Rangers or Celtic, both financially and in terms of global support. However, on a purely national level, only Man Utd are bigger.

Comparing Arsenal to Rangers is an insult to Arsenal. Embarrassment

There are only 2 world class teams in the UK, that's Arsenal and Man Utd, the rest is just details i'm afraid.

no kirk, i terms of success, rangers arent the biggest club in the world, the most successful clubs are liverpool and real madrid.

if rangers and celtic were in the premiership they wouldnt qualify for the champs league, i know its difficult for you but they dont do well in europe and they arent that good.
It is amazing what can be accomplised when nobody takes the credit

If Rangers were in the premiership, they would be the equivilant to something like Tottenham, Aston Villa or Everton. Mid-table wilderness to sum it up.  Big grin
