PC Startup Problems

Howdy guys and gals.

Here's the story

Today from work, I sent to my home email a 10mb file. When I downloaded my
email (in Outlook Express), and went to the message with the file attached, it
was clicking over trying to open it, and then the puter froze.

When I hit the reset button to start up windows again, it went to start up in
safe mode, and was getting "Windows Protection Error". (no device given).

OK...then being the amateur tech I am, I have totally screwed up my system I think. I got my Win98 CD and extracted what CAB files I could to the Windows directory on C:

Now when trying to get back into safe mode, it wants to do the Scandisk, but
it gets stuck.

I then get the Win98 CD to re-install windows from MS-DOS, and after
initialising setup.exe, it says that it has to scan the drive for errors. It
goes to Scandisk and there are shitloads of files which have errors in them.
If I chose not to fix the errors, it says that I have to fix any errors before
proceeding. So I start Scandisk again, and then start fixing the errors
(without doing the backup option), and it gets up to about 6% done, when it
hits the temporary internet folder, in which there are literally thousands of
files. After sitting there for nearly 20 minutes hitting ENTER (to fix) I then
get a "Runtime error" on some of these temporary internet files (there is no
particular one it happens is random).

Now, what I am trying to do is to get back into Windows so I can try and start the PC up in normal mode, so that I can retrieve data which I 100% cannot afford to lose (90% of it in my email).

I have been to the Microsoft database and it told me to rename Program Files
to oldprogs and Windows to oldwin....done all that...and still no joy.

Peoples, I am desparate for a solution here, as I need the PC over the weekend to get some urgent business done (for which details of everything is stored in my email).

Can anyone help me at all? If so, can you email me or even better catch me on ICQ #45397226 (of course, I am using ICQ Lite, but I think you can still
request authorisation on that).

Would appreciate any help you guys can give.

Scotty, the problem with trying to help you with this is that it seems to be a hands-on job. I'm sure I could eventually get you back up and running, but it's very difficult to do this by email or even over the phone. I'd have to search through your hard drive, salvage what I could, and then most likely reformat and reinstall the entire OS. This is why I can't stress enough to people to get rid of your DOS based OS (Win95/98/ME) and install an NT class OS (Win NT/2000/XP). Most of these problems would be easily avoided. Win95/98/ME are unstable because they sit on top of DOS, an 8 bit/pseudo 16 bit operating system that's prone to too many mishaps.

My suggestion is this: if you don't know what you're doing, then STOP. Get professional help. I know the costs might be high, but it might be worth it if you want to salvage your data. If you continue to fiddle around with these files, especially being an amateur, you might inadvertantly be doing more damage (remember how you got here in the first place?). I doub that anyone would be willing or even capable of successfully helping you to solve something as potentially complicated as this via ICQ, email or telephone.
