What Do You Think Of Chiu Chow And Shanghai Food?

Fri Jul 12, 2002 5:55 pm

Chinese Food varies according to the area in China where it originates. Many people who don't like American Chinese Food, which is often just a variation on Cantonese, ending up loving Shanghai or Chiu Chow Cuisine. If you are MSG sensitive, Chiu Chow is out!

Cantonese Cooking is renowned among Chinese and Westerners as the best of the seven major Chinese Cuisines. Out of these seven major Chinese Cuisines, I like Cantonese Food the most. However, I like Chiu Chow Food and I find Shanghai Food not bad.

If you like Chicken in soya sauce, cold crabs, sharks fin, deep fried greens etc; you will love Chiu Chow Food. The vegetables are crisps, the chicken is good, but check the menu price before ordering the high priced sharks fin soup. Chiu Chow is probably the greasiest of Chinese Cuisines. The tiny cups of Chiu Chow tea have more caffeine than coffee.

As for Shanghai Food, while somewhat similar to Peking Cuisine, Shanghai Food has an oilier, sweeter style that uses more preserved meats, fish, vegetables. Eels, hairy crabs and steam-fried strimps are popular.

So what do you think of Chiu Chow and Shanghai Food?

I really like Szechuan cuisine - I prefer a bit of spice with my food. I also like 'Hong Kong' style chinese food (apart from Dim Sum - man I hate that stuff).
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

Because they always put damn prawns in them! I HATE prawns and there doesn't seem to be a non-prawn alternative. Grrr!  Big thumbs up

Dim sum is not all about prawns, Ryan, I don't really like prawns too, but I absolutly love Dim Sum! I don't mind it disguised in siu mai or other dim sum's.

I like Shanghainese food, those coming from Hong Kogn will know there is a good restaurant in the basement on Peking Road, TST.(how ironic Smile)
