My roommate was sent by his employer to Kuala Lumpur and Malacca (sp?) for 3 months in 1997...he never felt unsafe.

As is usually the case anywhere in the world, despite some anti-Western rhetoric by the Malaysian government he found the Malaysian people, particularly the ethnic Malays, to be very, very friendly and accomodating, all the more so since he attempted to learn some phrases in the local language.

As far as the weather, he was there in Sept-Oct, and it was hot with frequent thunderstorms, as one might expect being so close to the equator.

I hope that helps.

I've spent loads of time in Malaysia - love the place. People are friendly and there is loads to do. If you want to know about it in more detail please feel free to send me an email and I will tell you the do's and dont's along with things you can see out there. You will have a great time - I promise!

As a Singaporean, it is very unSingaporean to say anything nice about Malaysia, but from the bottom of my heart, it is a great place to visit for a holiday.

Kuala Lumpur is truly a First World city at Third World prices. Taxis are dirt cheap, shopping is dirt cheap, people are nice (usually Malays are nicer than the Chinese though) and food is just GREAT! Also, it is a very safe country.

Would you be coming by Singapore?

Well, the taxi service here is rubbish. The ONLY place in the world where you have to ask the taxi driver where he is going.... No kidding. :p

Since you are going up to Malaysia, why not come down to Singapore as well. It's only a one hour plane journey down from Kuala Lumpur. You can't possibly stay in Malaysia for three weeks and not visit its neighbour, right?

Malaysians are generally friendly and kind. It's great for shopping and tours. Although their cities might be dirtier by our standards, it's still an enjoyable country.

Hehehehe,

It's great I'm sure, but don't believe them when they say the Petronas towers are the tallest in the world. They're not. Just out of curiousity, does anyone know whether there is an observation deck there? I'll be there in three months, & I am somewhat of an amature architect as well.

I've been up the Petronas Towers and yes, there is an observation deck located on the bridge connecting the two towers.

Be sure to go around Kuala Lumpur, there are LOTS of good shopping around. Theme parks are just about 2 hours ride out from KL by bus, and there are a few of them. Be sure to visit Genting Highlands for its casino!

Hope to see you around in Singapore anytime soon Luxair! Since your wife has been here, have you come before? It's easy to get from the airport to the city now as they opened a railway line recently.

Hi 9V-SVA, concerning the Petronas Towers, maybe a dumb question but I saw this bridge on pictures and it looks realy impressif so I asked myself if it could be possible to walk over this bridge? Yeaphhh If we talk about
shopping I think that I will see the most (if not all) of the shops existing in Kuala Lumpur, you know, my wife has an extraordinary talent to find shops  Smile/happy/getting dizzy (but I guess that women in general have this talent)
I was never in Singapore but I will go one day that's for sure! Ohhh, about the new railway I saw it here in The Netherlans, in a newspaper! They said that it is better, faster and cheaper to take the railway to go from the airport to the center of Kuala Lumpur than a Taxi, what do you think?

HI Luxair! I'd say go for the train, because taxis cost twice as much. It is also much more comfortable. As for shopping, you might want to try the three most popular in the KL area, Sunway Pyramid, Midvalley Megamall and of course, Suria KLCC, at the foot of the Petronas Towers. Also, a must see is Star Hill for the Nightlife! Enjoy yourself buddy!

LuxAir,

Yes you can walk across the towers. There's a catch to this thing though, You have to arrive early though to get tickets. This tickets are given out I think from 8Am and they will go in sequence of the time you can visit the towers' bridge. Its like if you're the first person, you get to visit the thing at 8AM while maybe the 100th person might be visiting at 9AM (think they go in batches of 20)...

PS: Try not to imagine what those pple on 911 feel. It really sucks.
Hope this helps.

Seeing that you will be staying at top end hotels, maybe you should use their limosine service, which I am sure they would provide for airport transfers. If I am not mistaken, Ritz Carlton is right in the middle of the shopping area, so taxi or other modes of transportation won't be needed for immediate shopping trips  Smile

Make sure you bring a lot of light material clothes because the weather there is always humid and very warm, and also do not forget your sunglasses and sunscreen.

If you happen to go to the street markets to shop, or just for the experience, never EVER take their first offer. Always bargain for a price that you think is ridiculously low. However, do not attempt this at retail outlets.

The 3 hotels you have mentioned are of excellent ratings and I am sure you would have an absolutely wild time  Smile Do send me an email if you have any other queries in regards to the country!

Have a great honeymoon!
