Check Out My New Ride

Sun Jul 14, 2002 11:45 pm

I just purchased a 1989 BMW 735i, with 90K miles. The car is fully loaded with Power Steering, Power Brakes, BMW Alloy Rims, New Yokohama Tires, Heated Seats, Power Seats, Power Headrest, Tool Kit is complete, Full Spare, Trip Computer, 6 CD Changer with New Stereo, Automatic Transmission. The guy selling the car didn't even try to clean the exterior or interior and I think it would have got another $700 in price added for appearance. I paid $5500.00 for the car. Have a look tell me what you think.

Not a bad rig. I'm not a big BMW fan (based on looks), but I like this one.

TechRep- If the mileage is legit, you did very well, indeed! Be certain that the timing belt has been replaced, and locate a very good BMW shop.

But I'm giving mechanical advice to one of the most qualified technos on the forum? D'oh!

Will you be remaining in the SAT area with your new situation?

I am off to Tulsa Oklahoma with Great Plains as their new Training Manager. Great Plains will be flying TUL-AUS shortly so I will be commuting via air home. I will be staying with the Director of Maintenance and the Chief Inspector in their crash pad in Tulsa. I was also just offered an interview for a Field Rep position for a yet undisclosed company, starting pay is 72K. If I land that job I am buying a 2002 Corvette and the wife will get the BMW. I plan to get in American Airlines' face in TUL and try to land something with them as well. I want to get some kind of part-time work too in TUL maybe a freight hauler turning wrenches part-time to stay limber.

Flight Level,

Great Plains starts service from TUL-AUS in two months. I am sorry you weren't copied in on the memo concerning Great Plains future plans. Since I am now a member of Great Plains I am privy to inside information of course that the public (you) are not aware of. Please do not be so quick to call a person a liar, all my information is credible and precise. The 1989 BMW 735i, the Flagship for BMW, has an option for heated seats, the button to turn it on is next to the seat. Unlike you, I have no reason to lie since I am the real deal, I slave to make a living for my family and we saved for almost a year to buy a BMW like the one I have now. You may now go back to the rock you crawled out from under at any time.

Please check out the following link, my car does not have the traction control, this was only optioned on the 735iL-750i/il. My car has the straight 6 engine which I wanted for reliability and lower cost when it breaks. I have no intention on trying to pay the bill for the V8 or god forbid the V12. Other than the traction control it has all the other options, please pay particular attention to the "heated seats". You may apologize at any time as well. The 1988-1993 BMW 7 (E32) are the same body and options for the most part in those years.

Flight Level. Knowing a new flight route is starting in 2 months is HARDLY insider information. we are not talking about illeagal stock tips here.

Also, when a man has a family, $5,000 is allot of money, especially for something like a Beamer. If you ever grow up, nd pull your thumb out of your mouth, you might realize this.

"Also, you slaved for a year to save $5000 to buy your BMW?"

Sounds very much like someone who has never:

(1) Had the responsibility of feeding a family; and

(2) Faced a job market in which the absence of good employment equals the absence of life's necessities.

I think you did marvelously well on that car, and I respect the good sense displayed in saving to buy a car for cash. You can always spend more, letr; it's not so easy to "un-spend," later.

BTW, the '82 Audi I had lo those many years ago had heated seats as an option. They have been common on European cars for years.

Good luck with Great Plains! (Flying your favorite great planes)

I am sorry whatever little respect I had for this loser (Flight level) I have now lost. If I could snap your little bird neck I would. To come into my post and call me a liar and to mock the fact it too me a year to save $5500 dollars makes me want to jump right through my cable modem and rip your head off. I am proud of my new car, when a little disrespectful toad like you comes in here and mocks the fact it took me a year to save $5500 dollars makes me want to do violence. You have disrespected me boy and I am not playing. I am a proud person, maybe I am taking this a little too personal but so be it.

$5500 is a decent price for this car not my style but is still a bargin.
"Mortages, food, kids, school, clothes, car expenses, insurance, 401 and taxes" can be a reality check something a lot of these kids on the forums can't relate to. It's intersting how a lot of 16-20 own brand new BMWs.  Yeah sure

To think that people spend $5500 for a down payment on a contemporary car vs' buying a nice used car is just nuts. Then again, you are taking a gamble with a 13 year old car too.

Enjoy the new ride Techrep.  Smokin cool

TechRep, I think you got an excellent deal. I hope you enjoy your new ride.

As far as Flight Level is concerned, I'd ease up a little. He's just a kid and doesn't know what he is talking about. After he puts a few years under his belt, maybe he'll be able to speak more intelligently and show proper respect to others. I wouldn't sweat it, man.

I currently drive a 1983 BMW 533i. The car has 245K miles and finally gave up the ghost. The car still runs fine but everything is going wrong with it in terms of little things. The car has the TRX metric tires which cost about $140 each and the brakes need complete overhaul front and back. Nothing works anymore but I paid $3000 for it 4 years ago. I put about 120K on the car and will be selling it for $500 bucks on EBAY soon.

I love BMW's but you have to baby them. I know a lot about BMW's and what to look for. In fact before I bought the car. I looked at every technical abnormality that this car year was prone too and this car exhibited none of them.

The guy selling the car was looking at me very strange and had no idea what he had. I made a list of everything wrong with the car as I went and told him I thought the car was running lean and maybe the engine could have cylinder damage. I wouldn't say I was lying but I was stretching the truth a lot. I talked him down $1200 bucks and by the time I was done I made him feel he had a lemon.

It is very difficult to find a car in this year that has this mileage, in fact I haven't found a car on EBAY or the internet with better mileage in this year. Another hard thing is to find a car in this year with all the extras working. The power head rests do not go up and down and I told him it will cost $500 dollars to get them working. In fact I could hear the motors working, they are very quite but the head rests have come off the track, a simple fix.

I have no remorse the guy is a used car wholesaler and I hate car salesman. I used my technical abilities to tell him everything wrong and not wrong with the car and it worked. I can turn around and sell the car for $7000 and if I try hard enough $7500. I however will keep her, she is my new baby.

Tech,
What a solid car! Wow, the interior looks awsome as well! As long as the origional owner took care of it, and you are willing to replace the busted parts with quality parts, as well as take care of it, it's going to last you a very long time.

Oh one more thing.
You know that plastic molding around the bottom of the car, as well as around the windows and such? I suggest using a product called "Mothers Back to Black" to get it looking brand new. It also gets deep dirt stains out and lasts 1-2 weeks depending on what kind of weather you drive in. I know because I use it.
Well I pretty much recommend it for every outside plastic, vinyl piece of the car!!!

Interesting you mentioned that I was looking into a product for that. I found a product to restore the leather it is used by car museums and it's called Leatherique Rejuvinator Oil. My understanding is there is nothing better than this product for leather. I hear it will make hard weathered leather feel new again. It's very expensive for what you get but well worth it I hear.

Yea, I use the Mothers Back to Black on everything. It also can be used on surfaces that aren't black, like your gray dash for instance.

It's in a red bottle FYI.

Glad I could offer a useful opinion,

I've got a question for you car buffs...

What's the best stuff to cut the road film and haze off of a windshield? I get it clean, but the film remains. Any ideas?

Thanks

I wash my windows as follows...

Wash normal when washing my car.
After car is dry, I wash with windex.
After the window gets dirty, I take a Swiffer cloth and clean it.

To clean road film off the exterior surface of the windshield use a bit of Bon Ami or baking soda mixed with water... wiping with a soft cloth. Rinse throughly.

Automatic on that car!!! That should be a crime  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Seriosuly, it looks great, a bit big for my taste, although if I were in the market for a family car it would be a great choice. This is what I love about Euro cars, a lot of them are designed so well, like this fine example, that the design looks very modern and contemporary 12 years later. I don't mean to offend anyone, but find an American car that does....

I don't see how that would offend, JAT.

Eurpoean & many Asian Sedans are designed to be somewhat conservative in appearence. This is why when I decide to work my Accord out, I left it looking bone stock (except for some trim work & de-badging --I hate labels; guess I am weird that way). It is a '91, but kept properly cleaned & waxed, I could pass it off as ' a few years old' to a properly ignorant person, (as TR could very easily do with that new bimmer of his). My best friend has a 1999 Pontiac GTP, & it's styling loooked very bold and "stunning" (it has a very swoopy look) when it came out, but now it is very easily dateable. To the point that on a recent double date, both the women we were with thought that my car was newer by about three model years! You should have seen the looks on their faces when the truth was revealed!
