Ever Been In A Tornado?

Mon Jul 15, 2002 11:58 am

I've been watching TLC tonight, with a series of shows about tornados. While I personally have never seen one, I was wondering how many of you have actually seen/been in a tornado? What are your recollections?

Plus, I was reading information on one of the largest tornados ever to hit the U.S.-the 1974 Xenia, Ohio tornado. Came upon this site:
http://www.interaxs.net/pub/hgr/tornado.htm

Theres some pretty good photos, but pull up the link that has almost 4 minutes of audio on that actual twister. It's pretty intense.

I've been in several tornados while I lived in Texas. Also saw many while on driving trips.

They are simply amazing. Like that guy on the shows tonight said, you earn a great respect for them when you see them.

NWA742, my wife lived in Des Moines for much of her life-we got married there-and she's told me how her family used to sit on porches at their house and friends' houses, and watch the twisters go by out on the plains.

She was at a friends house once, and the sirens went off. They went into the basement-5 minutes later, the basement was all that was left, yet she said that while they heard the twister, they didn't feel it, nor thought it was that close-but it took the house clean away. Amazing.

I was on I-35 the day of the Jarrell F5 tornado. I was north of it on a trip to Dallas, and I stopped at a rest center as soon as I heard about it on the radio. I went back south on I-35 to see it.

Pretty soon, it became visible and I stopped from there to watch it move south. It was simply horrifying and amazing at the same time. Police vehicles were stopped all over the place watching it.

After the tornado disappeared from my view, I turned back around with an interesting story to tell when I got to my destination.

It was the only F5 I've ever seen. Most storm chasers would be incredibily lucky to see even an F4, but quite a few of us saw the deadly weather that day in central Texas.

I've seen two tornadoes. One was in 1996, a pair of twisters that were rotating around a common point just off of Fort Lauderdale Beach.

The second was a touchdown about a mile away. Just saw this grey swirling mass descend from a nasty looking cloud out my patio and thinking "Oh G-d no!". I grabbed my cats threw them into the safest room in the house, got ready to get in there myself, grabbed the phone, and prepared for the worst. The tornado began to move towards me, but just as quick as it came it went back up into the clouds and was gone. Close call.

Seen a few funnel clouds during hurricanes too, but no touchdowns

I was in one in June 1990, an F1 that came through Ossining, NY. It went right behind my house. I was outside when it hit. I never want to see, hear, or feel another one.

It looked like a big black boiling cloud (like a bad fire?) coming at me very fast. By the time I turned around to go inside, it was on me.

Oh, and I went outside not because I knew it was coming, but because the wind stopped suddenly and I wanted to look at the weather.

The tornado was associated with a gust front, not a thunderstorm. The storms came later.

Almost. 1 block away when I lived in the northern part of Milwaukee, WI. Blew down some guy's garage, and went away. Probably not even an F1.
