Which Celebrity's Death Affected You The Most?

Tue Jul 16, 2002 4:57 am

For me, it has to be without a doubt the assassination of John Lennon. I was very shaken up by his death, and often wonder what he would have acheived had he lived longer. I will never forget the night he died, and it was announced on the news. I felt as if I had the wind knocked right out of me.

George Harrison's death was also, for me, very sad, even though it was expected. Another great artist.

Bridget Fonda.

I know she is still alive, but I have a strong sense that that will not remain so for long.

PS, I've never been wrong about that before, so we'll have to see...

Aaliyah (sp?). I love her music. But nobody seemed to care about her death, because just when the media began to report about it, it was 11sep.

I don't know. I just get feelings like that sometimes. Like when Phil Hartman died, or John Candy, or Regis Philbin (HA j/k, I wish). Also, I don't think madonna has much longer either (I hope I'm wrong about that one!) Also, it's not just celebs, I knew my wife was gonna be outta there three weeks before the 11th last year, and my step dad earlier this spring was no surprise to me as well (though that did happen in a violent auto wreck --no cancer or anything)

PS, I am not a hitman.

PS, I am not a hitman. LOL.

Seriously though. My wife and I talked about it and she said Princess Diana and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I can remember when Elvis and John Lennon died, but I was a child and didn't know much about them. When I grew older and was able to appreciate Lennon's work and his impact our culture, I fully realized that his death was indeed a horrible loss.

As a teenager, I was pretty shaken when Cliff Burton, the bassist of Metallica died. They were my favorite band of the time and, considering the freakish nature of his death, it disturbed me considerably. I was just an infant when Jimi Hendrix died so I don't remember it, but I always wondered what great music he might have created had he lived longer.

In addition, Stevie Ray Vaughan's death shocked me. I have a musical background and thereby had a deep appreciation for his talent (and still do). Another great artist whose life was cut tragically short.

The circumstances behind Phil Hartman's death were disturbing. I always enjoyed his work on SNL, but had he died another way, it probably wouldn't have affected me as much.

One last one... I never really cared for Nixon one way or the other. But I found his funeral to be quite poignant. Maybe it was because it was the first time I witnessed our Nation lay a former President to rest, but instead I think it was how the media tried to respectfully memorialize him after having vilified him for so many years.
Patrick Bateman is my hero.

For me personally..it was Princess Di. I was watching TV with some friends waiting in line to see RENT here in LJ. Very tragic. What an amazing woman she was.

I'm with KROC. If I enjoy Singer X's music or Actor Y's acting doesn't mean I give a shit about them personally.

Normalspeed, Kurt Cobain ? Spare me the tears ! Middle class white boy with too much money and attention looses it and eats his own bullet. BFD !

Saw a great t-shirt just yesterday. Cobain with a rifle in his mouth with 'NEVERMIND' written across it. Perfect !

Ditto for Diana.

The one that affected me most was the assassination of JFK. As very few of you were around at the time, I understand how you, well, don't understand.
When you are in first grade and 5 years old. The assassination of a national leader will affect you greatly. The only other example is when John Lennon was murdered. That hit me a bit hard also.

Nowadays it's the death of anyone younger than me that hits the hardest.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I would have to say Kurt Cobain, and recently Layne Stanley.

Their music pretty much was theme music to my High School years, I graduated in '94 and have fond memories of my many friends and the good times we had. And music was a big part of it, I freaking played the Singles Sound track and Dirt so many times I would have to go out and buy new cassets all the time because I would wear it out (or my friends would steal them Big grin

Many of them mentioned above now have some affect on me, but I only lived in the later part of the 80's, so John Lennon's death didn't have any affect on me. RIP btw.

I'd say Princess Diana, Layne Staley and Chris Farley.

RIP to all of them.

Aaliyah, and Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes. I LOVED TLC back in the day, and I was devastated to hear that she died. I wasn't much of an Aaliyah fan but when she died I cried for weeks because she was so young and had a lot going for her.

Jeremy. "I wasn't much of an Aaliyah fan but when she died I cried for weeks because she was so young and had a lot going for her."

You cried for weeks? Are you serious? Do you think if you died in a plane crash instead of her, she would cry over you? I'm not trying to be a dick, but seriously.

Did you ever lose a close family member? Apparently not, if you´re crying for some celebrity. The death of a loved one would put things back into perspective for you.

Of course a celebrity's passing will not deeply affect you. At least it shouldn't. But speaking in relative terms, some celebrities may have had some impact on us, maybe a song, painting, speech, or story, and their passing touches us just a bit more than, say, when Gene Rayburn died. (Unless you were a HUGE 'Match Game' fan)
The deaths, off the top of my head (no Cobain pun intended), that have saddened me a little bit more are: Freddie Mercury, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bob Ross (the 'happy trees' painter)(seriously), Willie Stargell (you'd have to have been a kid in 1970's Pittsburgh to appreciate that one), and while I was saddened by Kurt Cobain's wretched finale, its predictability and stupidity actually made me lose respect for him AND his art.
Ghosts appear and fade away.....................

Diana's death did not affect me at all, it was the country's reaction to it that got to me.

I don't think she did anything more than raise money and awareness for charities, which a lot of people, celebrities or not, do all the time for very little reward.

In fact, she had not seen her sons for approximately 6 weeks before she died, she was pictured on a yacht with her toyboy the week before. She was not an English rose.

Shocked by Lennon, who wasn't?
Ditto Diana-the nature of the death, I thought she might have topped herself one day.
Let's face it, Cobain was hardly a surprise was it?
The only one that really saddened me was Bill Hicks, most of you won't have heard of him, I'm tired now so do a web-search on him!

KROC, don't you read the papers or watch TV? Diana single-handedly discovered that shaking hands with an AIDS patient is not harmful and that landmines blow up little kids.

Seriously, what she did achieve was ...... hang on, I'll have to get back to you on that one!

Hmm, yes, Diana did a lot for charities, but then she was a) expected to and b) had a fair bit of time on her hands. She also shamelessly manipulated the media, both written and televisual (remember those oh so sad fluttering eyelashes as she slammed Prince Charles for committing adultery at the same time she was doing it as well?) to her own advantage whilst pretending she was "one of the people". I had very little time for her at all. When she died, yes, it was certainly a shock, the manner and timing of it; and a personal tragedy for her (obviously!) and her children. But the outpouring of "grief" by people who'd never met her was pretty hideous to watch. I truly felt like a foreigner in my own country, for the first - and I hope only - time. I just couldn't stop wondering what the hell was the matter with these people, and it was only after the event that larger numbers of people came out and said the same thing. At the time I was wondering if there was something wrong with me. So, in that sense, yes it affected me.

Now, the Queen Mother's death I felt much more comfortable about. A dignified respectful farewell to a woman who had served her country for a long time and for the most part very honourably. It was a reminder of how things should be done.

While it is a shame that people have had their lives snatched from them, many at a young age, the only one that bothered me has been HRH Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. She was a woman who showed grace and toughness at the same time during WWII. Yes she came from a privileged family but she inspired many during the air raids of London. She was formidable! May she rest in peace.

Ayrton Sena.
He died doing what he loved to do: racing.
I liked Sena, I think he was one of the most capable and talented F-1 pilots, yet very down to earth.
It was shocking to watch the accident live.

Agrodemm,

Right on with Ayrton. Even though his profession may have predisposed him to such a death, when it happened, it was truely a shock.

Another big one for me was when Randy Rhoads (Ozzie's first guitarist) was killed in a plane crash. I was pretty young then & a huge fan, so it hit me like a ton of bricks. BTW, none of his guitarists since have even come close.

None of them. This damn country should be sad when a soldier is killed. He should get a TV show. WHat a load of horse shit. You people make me sick. They are liers, manipulators and people with serious ego problems. None of them have any honor or integrity and as much as you like, them, they don't like you. If they ever met you theyd treat you like crap, with the exception of very few who deserve repect.

I wasn't much of an Aaliyah fan but when she died I cried for weeks because she was so young and had a lot going for her.

Only a family members death will severely affect me emotionally, not any celebrities. Although it is shocking and quite sad when someone dies, i see no reason why i should grieve for someone who i've never met and probably doesn't give a crap about me either. Princess Diana's death was shocking, but i didn't need to go to the psychiatrist afterwards.

I agree with those of you who've said a celebrity's death shouldn't affect us emotionally. Sure, it's not like we knew them and I think it's dumb to grieve for them.

The slant I take on celeb deaths is a purely selfish one: When Jeff Buckley died I was very sad. I am still very sad that he's dead. Why? Because I love his music and I'm sad that I'll not hear any more of it.
I don't mourn Jeff Buckley, I mourn the loss of his future music - music that more than likely would have given me as much pleasure as his past music does.
I don't give a rat's ass about the man himself - for all I know, he was a total jerk (although I must say that I've heard the opposite about him!) and his untimely death is no harder to bear than any other young man's.
