Tonight/Tomorrow Is Tisha Bav

Thu Jul 18, 2002 7:22 am

Tonight and tomorrow is the Jewish holiday of Tisha B'av. This is the day that the Romans broke into the Holy Temple in Jerusalem (of which the Kosel, or the western wall is the only thing left) and set it ablaze. The hebrew date, the ninth day of the month of Av, is also the day the Inquisition started in Spain in 1492 and the day WW1 started in 1914 (?)

The holiday is a fast day and it is like we are in mourning. We listen to people read Eichah, the book of Lamentations and other Kinnos, which are tales of destruction and pain in Jewish history.
