If You Could Go Back In Time?

Fri Jul 19, 2002 9:07 am

I've been reading Michael Crichton's book, Timeline, which deals with quantum physics and traveling to different times in alternate universes. If you could choose an era and location to visit, where would you go?

One that leaps instantly to mind:

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina - December 17, 1903.

I'd like to watch the Wright Brothers first historic flight, knowing that their success would launch a giant industry in years to come.

A date that comes to mind is 9/11/02.

I'd make a few phone calls early in the morning.

I am with dripstick on going back to the morning of Sept 11th. I would do anything in my power to erase the vision that has been stuck in my mind of that dark grey and blue 767 thundering overhead into the south tower. Just thinking back to it right now makes me lower my head in disgust just as I did watching that same scene almost a year ago. To rid myself of this nightmare would be a blessing.

Hmm....no, I don't want to experience horrible events in world history again....

I would choose the day of the famous speech of Dr. Martin Luther King.....

I'd love to be a hippie in the 60s and 70s. It seems like such an interesting part in American history. It is more modern and really affected culture. The 60s was such an interesting decade in the United States.

Me? I'd go back to Seattle about 20-something years ago; look up a kid by the name of Bill Gates and give him a couple of grand in exchange for a piece of the pie.

KL713, I think you misunderstood what myself and others who would like to go back to 9/11 meant. Not to experience it, but to change the events that happend.

I'd go back in time and stop the creation of Disco. Or I'd settle for preventing this guy's birth:

Or preventing the birth of Goodbye. Whatever.  Big thumbs up

Go back to when IBM first went on the stock market and find as much money as I could to place on it or any high stock on the stock market.

Forget it guys. Think about what you are saying. Time travel is not, can not, and will not ever be possible. But it is fun to think about the possibilities though. The Back To The Future movies are some of my favorites. If it was, why haven't we been inundadted with visitors from the future?

There are all kinds of problems associated with time travel. The biggest one is the so-called "paradox".

Take 9/11 for example. You say you would go back and try and stop it. So you did, and the collapse of the WTC never took place. Since that event never took place, there would be no reason for you to travel back in time to prevent it. Since you never came back to prevent it, it therefore did occur. Since it did, you travel back, and so on and so on. The series of events becomes stuck in a perpetual loop.

It's the same thing as the so-called "Grandfather Paradox". What would happen if you travelled say 70 years into the past and killed your grandfather when he was just a baby? hat would mean that he wouldn't have fathered your father, who in turn fathered you. Therefore you wouldn't have been born. If you weren't born, then you couldn't go back and kill him. Since you didn't kill him, he was born. Again, there's that vicious cycle.

I've read many books and articles on the subject, some with sharply differing opinions. Most have talked about how time travel is theoretically possible, but the technical challenges alone seem to all but guarantee that it will forever be just a fantasy.

then there's the issue of altering history.

Perhaps we may only be able to travel back or forward in time to only witness events. We will not be able to interact with them.

Who knows.....it is fascinating to think about.

Oh...and to answer all of your questions:

I may want to go back and witness my own birth or my parents wedding, or the Wright Brothers first flight, or something lofty like that.

But I'd spend more of my time buying Lottery Tickets and playing the Stock Market.

I'd also make stops along the way, buying products and items that have long since been discontinued and have an E-bay bonanza.

Very good post Matt D.

But according to Crichton's book (I'm only 300 pages or so into it and I am keeping in mind that it is a work of fiction), the people who developed this quantum technology claim that time travel is indeed impossible; they are traveling to alternate universes instead. They also claim that "time paradoxes" do not exist, that one person cannot have much of an effect on history. However, they do take precautions against introducing technology (weapons, etc) into these other universes. It's a little confusing.

It could be that the characters have their own agenda and are trying to mislead others. When I finish the book, I'll know for sure.

Option #1: Go to Kitty Hawk and persuade the Wright Brothers to let me make the first flight. If they don't let me, I'll pursade them with a lead pipe.

Option #2: Go to London circa 1977. Buy up all the punk records I can, come back to the present and make a load of cash selling them off.

Option #3: Go to Vienna and convince Hitler to just concentrate on his paintings.

Option #4: Tell JFK not to go to Dallas during 1963. And ask him for MM's #.

Option #5: Go back and snatch up ever copy of the 'Butcher Cover' of the Beatles' "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" and come back to the present and make a mint.

Option #6: Go to Russia circa 1917, and kill Lenin, and proclaim myself as the rightful ruler.

I would find a way to be on the roof of tower two when AA11 struck tower one. I would bring the most up-to-date video recording technology available. I mean, man alive, to see something like that live! (I was more than ten blocks away at the time; didn't see much until they actually fell). I would also have made sure to have several RPGs with me at the time (Rediculous? Yes, but no more so than traveling in time), so as to crash the second plane before it could strike. Since it is quite unlikely that the north tower would have collapsed if no. 2 didn't, I would be very genuinely interested to see how PA handles the repair effort. Also, I would become a billionaire from copyrighting that footage.

I'd return to:
-The first flight (Kitty Hawk, 1903)
-The last Delta L-1011 flight (and be on the flight this time, not told by the reservations agent that the L10s had been retired on 7/17/02!)
-1969, to be able to watch the Apollo 11 landing (on TV)
...or go back to every time I screwed something up & correct it, and relive all of the most enjoyable moments in my life.

I would also go forward, to see whether or not I get married, what job I have, the planes, airports & airlines of the future, etc.

Just my ideas!

Matt D- I've heard of the "Grandfather Paradox" & I thought it was an interesting concept.

I would go back to Adam and Eve and make sure that they do not eat the apple. We would all be better off if they did not sin. Sept 11 would be the second priority. I doubt however that kind of technology exists.

1978

That was such a great time. You had disco, progressive rock, funk, good R&B, big Lincolns, 8tracks, bell bottoms, Jimmy Carter, people were more laid back.
Also you had 747s, 727s & DC-10s with 707s, DC-8s, Convair 990s, VC-10s, SUD Caravelles, Tridents, L-1011s, TU-144, Concorde all in service.

June 6th 1944, at about 6:00am a landing craft headed for Omaha Beach, call me crazy, but I'd give anything to experience the invasion of Normandy.
