Most Famous Race Tracks?

Tue Aug 06, 2002 8:25 am

What do you think, what are the most famous race tracks around the world?

I'd say:

1. Monaco
2. Le Mans
3. Nürburgring
4. Indianapolis Speedway

It would definitely have to be The Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Then Monaco, Daytona, and the Long Beach road course.

What the hell, how could Nürburgring have a higher place on your list Racko than Indy? What is so special about Nürburgring anyway?

There is only one. All others take second.
Nürburgring?????? LOL Give me a break! Longest track but that is about it. Obviously not a "true" racing fan.

We're talking about world-wide, not only the USA. I've never heard of "Talledega". And anybody who doesn't know the "Green Hell" isn't a "true" racing fan, racing is more than Nascar.

Daytona for the birth of NASCAR (and I live there)
Indy for the 500

Myself never really a fan of the races, but it just amazes the specetacle that this single event draws. I myself am kind of liking it.

All were taken by me Big grin , one of these days I think I will go down and see one of the big Daytona Races.

Well, even if you dislike ovals (like me), you have to admit that Indy is the most famous in terms of pure name recognition...

Other than that (in no particular order):

Le Mans,
Daytona,
Monaco,
Nurburgring (the original, not the little one they use now)
Watkins Glen,
Laguna Seca,
Suzuka,
Sebring
Does Bonneville count? it's not really a track, but.....

Sorry NASCAR fans.....the question was "...around the world" .....and outside North America, few people (if any) have heard of Darlington, Bristol, Talladega, Dover, Richmond, etc...even if they offer exciting racing.

Dude no shit I live less than a Quarter mile from Raceway Park, when they have those Jet cars going my freaking house shakes.

I've been living here for about 20 years, alot of new money folks have moved into $800,000 McMansions during the Winter right behind the Track and Old Bridge airport, they throw shit fits all the time.

You should have seen the crowd we had over the Weekend, they had some kind of Celebrity car show with a bunch of rappers like Wycleff and the place was swarming with folks. I could'nt even get into Wawa.

They've recently built a road coarse there, although I doub't CART or F-1 will be visiting anytime soon.

Yeah the nerve of these people. Raceway Parks been there since I think 1965 and these out of towners buy a house in Englishtown or Manalapan totally oblivious to what's next door. Hell if it was me I'd be pleasantly surprised! Smile

I used to go to RP all the time when I was younger, as a matter of fact the last big event I went to was the 1980 Summer Nationals, I think they changed the Summer Nationals to the Mopar Nationals and moved it from July back to May. But for all I know its changed again.

I remember back in the '70s they had a Grateful Dead concert in RP and Englishtown became a mini Woodstock. Concert goers sleeping in peoples yards and the like.

But back to Drag Racing, to me there's nothing like it. Those Top Fuelers thundering down the track makes your insides rattle. I gotta get back there!

The Gratefull Dead show was around '77 (I think), we moved here in '78.

I love the stories some folks I know tell of hippies literally laying all over the place with the VW vans.

I used to ride my YZ dirt bike through the woods behind Raceway Park and Old Bridge airport, I would come across these old campsites all over the place and imagine all the trippy hippies dancing around naked Smile

I had a little experience when I went to Woodstock II in '94.

And yeah Mopar Summer Nationals is the big event, along with the "Night of thrill"s . Where they have that truck-asaurus creature eating cars and shooting out flames and fireworks.

It always gets me these "most famous" threads.

How can people say with so much foresight that Indianapolis or Monaco or NewBurgerRings (mmmmm...Burger Rings) is the most famous track? To say that, you would have had to have done a worldwide poll on this question. So in that case, you guys would have no problem in showing me those poll results?  Insane

And anyway, you guys have no idea. We all know the most famous race track is Royal Ascot  Wink/being sarcastic

Well excuuuuuussssseeeeee me Aviatsiya.ru, We all cant help it that your beloved Australia is not a big auto racing country. I do however find the emu races just hillarious.

It's still the Brickyard over there in Indy that is tops.

You want poll results? Do the research yourself and while you are at it just ask anyone of the over 100,000 people who witness the 500 each May. That famous enough for ya?

Royal Ascot pfff!  Insane

Let me correct Clipper here. You were just a little off in terms of the actual attendence.

In terms of attendance, the Indy 500 is the largest single-day sporting event in the world. With 250,000 seats, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the largest sports venue in the world

Source: http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/ce/feature/0,1518,2401086_6,00.html

Believe me, every May, each one of those 250,000 seats is full!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well, do you honestly think after drinking all that beer and frying in the sun and being bombarded with all that stimuli, that all 250,000 spectators will be able to answer that yahoo's question? Probably not. LOL Hence the 100,000 figure.

Just to leave the race track parking lot after the 500 takes longer than the race itself!  Smile

Well I agree with you there. I can't imagine how much hell people go through when they try to leave the Indy race once it's over. I've been to two nascar races here at the Las Vegas Speedway and it's taken at least 3 to 4 hours to get outta there, and that's "only" with 140,000 people, lol  Laugh out loud

Nurburgring (The Green Hell, old circuit)
Monza
Monaco
Indianapolis
Daytona
Le Mans

http://www.motorcycle-dk.com/en/multimedia/ download some videos from Nurburgring from that website (but do it fast, the website might not stay for long since the webmaster died in an accident at Nurburgring in late June) and see for yourself why the Green Hell is a legend among true racing fans.

The old track is still used for some races, e.g. the 24h race. And it is the no.1 test-track for sportive cars, if a car is faster than 8:30 on the track, then it's a sport car  Big grin

Well, the good thing about F1 is that it is WORLD known and people WORLDWIDE are interested in it! But I'm sure thats not the topic and the goal can't be another US vs. Europe discussion.

My favorite and my personal "most famous" Race Track is:

KUALA LUMPUR (MALAYSIA) - SEPANG CIRCUIT

Sepang is, with Interlagos, Spa Francorchamps and Suzuka, the only modern F1 circuit to be a real challenge for the drivers.

The other circuits on the F1 calendar are awful, like the new Hockenheim, Magny-Cours (i think it's the most boring F1 racetrack in the world!), the new A1 Ring, the new Nurburgring... etc

How can you put anything other than Indy at #1? Host to the greatest spectacle in IndyCar racing, as well as one of the most prestigious NASCAR races, and host to a Formula1 race. The first great track in the world, with a very long history of great racing.
#2 would be Daytona, a close second. One of the first built, one of the fastest built, it holds the history of NASCAR in its backyard, and is stage to some of the best racing ever. Many legends from many different backgrounds have raced at Daytona, making it an exciting, as well as history-filled track.
Number three is Charlotte....erm...Lowe's Motor Speedway. Once again, one of the first and fastest built, it also holds the history and background of NASCAR in its backyard. 30+ race teams are based in Morrisville, just up I-77 from the speedway. Home to extremely exciting NASCAR races, LMS also hosted the annually exciting Indy race, until that was cancelled in the face of tragedy (Spectators killed after debris came from car to stands. Track deemed 'unsafe' at the high speeds Indy cars run on a track like that) But the racing was nonetheless great.

Other competitors include Darlington, Laguna Seca, Bristol, Le Mans, the original Nurburgring, and of course, the track where they hold the Indy race at Cleveland (at the airport! The straightaways are the runways!)

IMO, the top 5 (in no order w/ the exception of Indy, which is probably #1) would be:
Indianapolis
Daytona
Le Mans
Sebring
Laguna Seca
