Any Tennis Fans Here?

I love tennis. Favorite players are Monica Seles and Thomas Enqvist.

Just imagine being a top tennis player and an airline enthusiast. Not only do you get paid for the sport you love, but you also get to fly everywhere! You can't beat it.  Smile

I hope Monica gets her ass is shape and start beating the Williams sisters and Jennifer Capriati. Monica should have had about 20 grand slams now if it weren't for Parche. Butt head. Damn German legal system for letting him go. Pfff.

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Parche, and what's his relation with the German legal system?

Back in the early '90s. Seles was the top female tennis player. She dethroned Graf, who is German, to get to the top. Monica was kicking everyones butt, including Graf's, and a certain German named Gunther Parche couldn't stand the fact Graf was no. 2 and Seles no. 1. Parche decided to take matters into his own hands, so on April 30th, 1993, in front of 3,000 people, Parche drives a knife into the back of Seles during a change over in a event in Hamburg, Germany. His reason: He couldn't stand the fact Graf was no. 2 in the ranking, and he wanted her back at #1. The murder attempt happened on centre court (in front of 3,000 people). And it was also caught on video by a German TV station who was broadcasting the match. You think this would have meant a sure convinction (man attacks a world famous athlete in front of thousands of people and it's caught on film) but the judge felt sympathy for the man and gave him a 2 year suspended sentence. Parche didn't go to jail for what he did. And he got his wish that Seles was so traumatized she didn't return to tennis until 2 1/2 years later. Graf became #1 just a few weeks after the stabbing and won the majority of the major titles in Seles' absense (giving the phrase Graf completed a "Grand Stab" after winning the first 4 majors after the Seles stabbing).

In this case the German legal system stunk. What civilized legal system would not have convicted a man who tried to kill a professional athlete in front of thousands of people?

Along side hockey, I love tennis. Wish I could have played more...I started a little too late though.

I am a fan of Lindsay Davenport though she has been out of the scene lately. Andy Roddick has a lot of promise too, if he can stay injury free.

Bonjour Chef!

Ah, I remember that incident. Very bad indeed, but I don't think you can't vlame Graf for a mad fan. But are you sure that he was not put into a "Psychological jail" ? What is he doing today ?

I enjoy tennis. I am more of a fan of the womens side than the mens. I like Serena Williams, J-Cap, and the one making her comeback from that achillies injury...her name escapes me now. I also like to watch Venus play. The women seem to be playing a better style of tennis now. Speed, finess, power, and 3 sets. Sometimes 5 sets just takes to long. With Sampress' fall out, the mens side seems to be looking for that dominate player. Maybe the Agassi/Graf kid will do it.

I am a HUGE tennis fan! I was just now watching Hewitt vs. Moya, but ESPN cut it off to show a baseball game. My fav player is Andre Agassi, hands down. He's a legend.

MSYtristar. I'd cut off tennis to show the( and my beloved) NY Met's as well. Okay, well maybe not this year, but Sunday Night Baseball is a staple in Sunday Night T.V.  Big grin

Yep, another tennis fan here  Smile

That incident with Seles was very unfortunate, and who knows, she could've won more Slams. It's all 'woulda coulda' talk, but we'll never know will we?

I think Roddick has the game to win multiple Slams but I don't think he's mentally upto it yet. He could put it all together at this year's US Open though. I'm tipping him to win the US Open. Roddick has to come good sooner or later so I'll go with him  Smile

There are no other clear favorites to win the last Slam of the year apart from Roddick, Hewitt & Safin (you can never rule out defending champions).

I'm not expecting too much from Sampras, can't see him winning. He's going to need an easy draw like Hewitt at Wimbledon.
