Any Basketball Experts?

Wed Aug 14, 2002 6:31 am

Are there any basketball experts on this forum? I'm sure some of you follow the NBA.

I have some questions regarding the upcoming world-cup:

Why do some team mangers not allow their players to represent their countries at the world cup?
What are the favorites ? Probably the USA, but who else?
How good is China? How good is Germany? The manager of the Dallas Mavericks allowed Dirk Nowitzki to play for Germany, probably after the chancellor exchanged some words with him (The basketball team visited the chancellor yesterday and he said that he would do what he can to make him available). Is Nowitzki really that good? How good is he compared with the best players and compared with other German players?

Thanks in advance for your answers  Smile

Racko. Let me take a stab at some of these.

Why do some team mangers not allow their players to represent their countries at the world cup?

If you mean NBA teams, its because the risk of a severe injury is always present. I have never heard anyone not allowing their players to go though. Mark Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks owner, and a good guy, threatened to not allow his players to go, unless he was covered by more insurance due to the fact he has 4 of his 5 starting players playing. I am sure that was worked out though.

I would say the U.S. is the favorite, but teams rom eastern Europe fair well as well. Sometimes teams like Brazil can be good as well. China is a good team, but that mostly revolves around Yao Ming. They could be another favorite. I'm not sure how good Germany is.

Is Nowitzki really that good? How good is he compared with the best players and compared with other German players?

Dirk is a very good player, and a perfect fit in Dallas. Stacking up against the other league best, he is easily in the top 10 or 15 players in the league. His performance in this past years playoff's was remarkable, especially since he was hurt.

Hope this helps.

Thanks KROC. I'm going the basketball world cup although I've never really followed Basketball. But I didn't follow swimming or athletics either, and both euro. championships were really entertaining, so I'm going to watch some other "new"(for me) sports in the future  Smile

Don't count out Croatia, Yugoslavia, Russia or Australia. All four are good teams.
