The Future Of Los Angeles

Thu Aug 15, 2002 11:33 am

There's been alot of grumbling lately from the San Fernando valley about a possible split-up of Los Angeles. They want to make an entirely new independent city of about a million or so people, effectively dropping the status of Los Angeles to number 3 on the list of America's big cities (Chicago would be bumped up to a much deserved #2).

Unlike most of my NorCal comrades, I don't wish any ill will on our southern neighbour, but considering how LA has screwed it's own people over so seriously over the last few years, I can't blame the Valley (and West Hollywood) for wanting to leave the whole mess behind.

This is probably the biggest secession of it's kind in history for a large American city. What do you think? Do you believe this could work? The research implies that it's possible.

Isn't that essentially what NYC did with the 5 borroughs? I don't know if that's the same, but wouldn't that be a good case study?

It's not the same. The boroughs are still a part of NYC, and the borough presidents still report to Mike Bloomberg, along with the councilmen.

The San Fernando Valley and West Hollywood would become a COMPLETELY NEW CITY with it's own mayor, police department, transit authority and city council.

NYC did the opposite. It was 5 independent counties that merged into a city. They want to split up LA.

I don't want anything bad to happen to L.A., I just don't want to live there anymore.

This has been going on for years. Those valley residents have been complaining for generations. Mayor Sam Yorty was whinning about this back in the 1950s. The Valley has become more and more like the rest of L.A. (Basin) with crime, pollution, homeless and all other big city problems.
I doubt this sort of succession will ever happen.
