Kuala Lumpur's New Monorail Set To Open

Mon Aug 19, 2002 8:15 am

The missing link in the Malaysian capital's mass-transport system, the KL Monorail, is up and ready to start carrying an estimated 85,000 passengers a day when operations begin at the end of the month. Heeding lessons from the city's two light rail transit systems (LRT), which had to be bailed out by the government, the KL Monorail aims to pay its own way. It has set up an aggressive sponsorship campaign, which sees one stop's official name as 'Bukit Bintang Coca-Cola' station, and is courting companies to dress up the trains in their corporate logos for a sizeable fee. The Monorail will have a major advantage in comparison to the LRTs, which mainly serve Kuala Lumpur's business districts, in that it will pass along Bukit Bintang, with its shopping centers, hotels and outdoor cafes. One of the stations will be at the Berjaya Times Square, which will be Asia's biggest shopping mall when it opens next July. It will have over 800 shops spread over 12 floors. Monorail fares will compare favourably with taxis and the monorail will link up with the LTRs and three other train networks at KL Sentral, the grand central station.

Pretty cool.
