Hostage-Taking In Iraqi Embassy In Berlin!

Tue Aug 20, 2002 11:34 pm

An iraqi opposition group called "Democratic Iraqi Opposition of Germany" has taken an unknown number of hostages in the iraqi embassy in Berlin. 2 people have been wounded. According to N-TV around 200 police men are at the scene, and the GSG-9 is on their way to Berlin.

Here's the statement of the group:

"In the name of the Iraqi people and their legitimate leadership, the Iraqi opposition, we declare that the liberation of Iraqi soil begins today. We are taking over the Iraqi Embassy in Berlin and with this the first step in the liberation of our beloved fatherland.

"This first step against the terrorist regime of Saddam Hussein and his killers, which is taking place with a peaceful purpose, is intended to make the German people, its organizations and its political powers understand that our people have a desire to be free and will act on it.

"The Germans understand our concerns. They were also once able to formulate the basis of democracy in the St. Paul's Church and they also suffered and bled under the dictatorship and tyranny of Hitler's National Socialists. These parallels unite democrats.

"Our action is peaceful and temporary. Our path is the freedom of Baghdad. The path of peace and justice of our people and its legitimate leadership (is) the Iraqi opposition, which stands determined and united here today."

"Signed, Iraqi People's Representation, Riemeister Strasse 20, 14169 Berlin."

OK, now if they are smart, they will end the standoff now, before they are backed into a corner and someone gets hurt, negating any goodwill they may have. They've gotten people's attention in a harmless way, and now they should pack their bags and walk away before people are convinced that THEY are the criminals.

Two people are already hurt and gunshots have been fired. Not such a peaceful protest after all.

You can sypathise with their aims but they have gone about it the wrong way. Taking people hostage is the sort of trick that Saddam would do and it won't gain them any friends.

Peace protests are one thing, hostages is another. I dont think this group would harm any of the people inside, hopefully it will show just how desperate iraqis are to get rid of saddam.Hostage taking is wrong though.
It is amazing what can be accomplised when nobody takes the credit

Agreed. But you gotta admit, it is nice to see scumbags on the receiving end of terrorism for a change.

All they need now is one dead body, and then the GSG9 (most likely with SAS assistance, we can't forget Princess Gate) will be given the clearance to storm the building. And then the world will once again condemn Iraq...

Of course, they need Iraq's permission to do so.

... in the iraqi embassy in Berlin....
A spokesman of the police said that the ambassador is among the hostages.

Actually, there is no ambassador of the Iraq in Berlin (and vice versa: no German abmassador in Baghdad) as there are no bilateral relationships between the two countries. And there is no Iraqi embassy but a consulate with some diplomats.

NoUFO, maybe true but the spokesman clearly talked about an ambassador...

CPH-R, what is/was Princess Gate and for what do we need the SAS to storm a little embassy ?

While I sympathize with the Iraqi people and the suffering they endure under Saddam this is not the way to go about furthering your cause.

Princess Gate was where the Iranian Embassy was in London in the early eighties. In 1981 (I think) a radical group seized contol of the Embassy. After killing a hostage the SAS was sent in to clear the embassy. Almost all the terrorists were killed with only on casualty among the hostages (I think). GSG-9 is more than capable in handling the situation on their own if called on to take action.
