My Computer Won't Turn On!

Sat Aug 24, 2002 10:17 pm

Hey all,
I need some computer help. Last week I was in France so before I left I shut off the computers. I shut them both down properly by going to the start menu and going through the shut down process. On my second computer it said "It Is Now Safe To Shut Down Your Computer" so I flipped the switch on the surge protector and the computer shut off. No zapping noises or anything unusual. When I came back from France, I turned the surge protector on and hit the power button on my computer. I got nothing. It didn't zap, no lights...nada. I tried plugging it into the wall instead of the surge protector and it made no difference. What could have happened? Could it have gotten zapped somehow while I was gone?? It wouldn't be through the phone line because it runs on Cable Modem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Did you through the x-ray your laptop? It will damage your hard drive if your laptop through the x-ray. Sorry! I thought you know about that all computers never go thru x-ray. Next time, ask the guard if computer is alright to thru or not to thru.

Big777jet,
It wasn't a laptop and I didn't take it with me and it didn't touch the X-Ray.

Perhaps it's the Power Supply? I disconnected my old power supply and connected a less powerful one to just the motherboard and harddrive but it still didn't work.  Confused

Maybe the plug receptacle has a loose connection. Try plugging your radio where you usually plug your computer.

Have you tried hitting it real hard? Something may need to be knocked back into place.

also make sure that the power cord is firm in the back of the computer. Sometimes that works its way loose.  Smile

Powercord, main powerswitch, try opening the case and blowing hard.. lol.

Otherwise, find a spare power supply and use that. I had a problem where a powercut in the middle of the night switched my computer off, and I couldn't get it to switch back on. Eventually a tried a different power supply and found that it worked.

Odd huh.

I also had a monitor that broke because of a power cut, god I hate powercuts!!!

Also check the fuse in the surge protector.

Voltage in France runs at 220V. I assume you're in the US....switch it back to 110V. Check all the stupid things first, cables, PSU connection to mobo, etc.

Are you serious that laptops could not go through X-Rays???? So what about at the airport ones?

Best Regards

You switched out the power supply? Gee I'd just assume a tripped breaker. As Radarbeam said, plug something else into the receptacle. Of course if the surge protector lit up you know you've got power. Did it?

PS: A loose connection in the receptacle is not likely.

Laptops can go through x-rays, on my recent trip out of MCO, they made me put it though the usual Rapiscan as well as an Examinder 3DX-6000 (a 3D CT scanner) and my ThinkPad 770X sustained no damage...

The power is fine. The monitor gets power through the same strip. The light on the switch turns on. It's fine. I don't know what else to do. I wanted to try a spare power supply (145 w) to just power the MOBO and the hard drive but the machine did not start up. Is there any other essential piece of hardware that I need to give power to? As far as I know, the CPU gets it's power through the MOBO. What other possibilities are there?

Did you plug the CPU into another outlet on the Surge protector or directly into the wall outlet? You may also want to try a different power cord to the CPU.

Good luck.
