Computer/Windows Questions..

Tue Sep 10, 2002 7:05 pm

I'll try not to waste time here...

problem: after a system lock-up and a re-boot, now everytime I go to dial up with the modem the infamous blue-screen of death comes up, y'know "A fatal exception has occurred at..." I rechecked the drivers and re-booted but the problem is still coming up. Had been connected to Kazaa previous but not doing anything, had just logged on.

Any suggestions? At least a starting place? Finally, is there a site (Microsoft...) where the fault causes are listed so I can track it down and hopefully fix the problem.

Thanks in advance for your help!

regards,
Tom

You could try and reinstal your modem?

Step 1: Ditch Windows 98
Step 2: Upgrade to Windows 2000.

Honestly, this is the best advice I can give you.

Even Windows XP.. which is based off the NT kernel (same thing 2k is based off) would be great. XP is more compatible with stuff. Anybody that still has Windows 98 I strongly suggest you upgrade to 2k or XP. It is just so much more stable, you won't need to bitch about 'blue screens of death' anymore and be so anti-microsoft.

Go with Windows 2000, far more stable and 98 or {GAG} ME. XP is ok but I've worked with both XP and 2000 @ work and XP seems to be nothing but 2000 with lots of bells and whistles. I use 2000 @ home and it has run everything I've needed from games to useful software like Office, WordPerfect, etc.

While in principal upgrading to 2k or XP might be the best solution... not all of us running 98 or 98SE have systems that could support 2k or XP.

Try this, when your computer begins to get crash happy go through and clean out the internet cache, cookies, temp file from all the browsers you use, clean out the Windows Temp folders and run a thorough Scandisk scan. By doing this you might uncover a few system errors.

Also, defragment your hard drive now and then, especially if you use any file sharing programs. Just run scan disk first to check for lost clusters.

Also, if you're using Kazaa, that could be part of your problem. Kazaa contains a ton of spyware which can really FUBAR your computer. Get rid of it and download Adaware. It will remove the spyware from your computer.

B757300 THANKS for that link!

Now I know why my hard drive was spinning all the damn time... I knew it had something to do with Kazaa though...

Thanks for all the help.

Upgrading is not an option right now, y'know things like rent and food get in the way. Wink/being sarcastic I had thought that it might be related to the modem (drivers et. al.) but haven't had a chance to work on it. Oh and thanks for the adaware info.
