City Architecture Can Affect The Weather..

Sat Sep 14, 2002 4:28 am

..according to this story which reports a professor telling a conference that tall and large buildings can induce rainfall/bad weatherl! This professor thinks that cities are now creating their own weather systems.

I don't know about the rain thing.

But it has been known for years that cities are generally warmer then outlying areas. This is a mostly because the dark pavement and roofs soaking up heat from the sun much more effectively then fields and trees.

But heat loss through the walls of heated buildings also contributes.

It has also been shown that air pollution particles can act as "seeds" in the formation of fog.

L-188 - moreso that the large buildings effectively act as a windbreak, and so the temperatures are much the same in the city but for the windchill factor that effects areas not in the city.

David_itl - still doesn't explain why it always pisses down on Manchester!!!

EGGD, it doesn't though! There's a city to the southwest of you that has more rain than Manchester but no-one ever says anything about them yet that city touts itself as the English Riviera  Nuts
