Places In Asia To Visit?

Tue Sep 17, 2002 9:00 am

Instead of Christmas gifts (and instead of my planned trip to spot in Europe using my own money), my dad suggested that I use one of his unused business class tickets to Asia. He has two, one on JL, one on CX from business trips that he had ticketed, but never actually went (they are discounted C class, which means they are non-refundable). I am considering doing this instead of going to Europe. Does anyone have any favorite Asian destinations? I was thinking about Bali, because it is cheap and nice hotels are very inexpensive. The criteria is that I kind of want it to be in a semi-warm climate and inexpensive. Does anyone have any feedback about Bali? Or other suggestions of places to visit in Asia (The only place I have been is Hong Kong). Also should I use the JL or CX ticket? (I am leaning toward the CX ticket).
Thanks
JCS

Bali is not 'semi-warm'. It is as tropical as tropical areas get.

yes use the CX ticket.

Why not visit Singapore and Malaysia? Kuala Lumpur is a real cool city. First world city at third world prices.... Not many other cities in the world come close to this. Everyone speaks English, it's real easy to get around, the shopping and food is just superb.

Well, I have been to many cities in Asia, but perhaps someone else can answer the first bit, but I would go with Cathay also. I have travelled both these airlines, JAL and CX, and found Cathay to be one of the best airlines I have travelled on. JAL was good, but not as good as Cathay.

Hong Kong is a beautiful, beautiful city, but very expensive. It's not the shopping paradise it once was. I would recommend South Korea, but I think it is a better place to go if you really know someone. Japan is awesome, but expensive.

I think Thailand or Malaysia would be the best places to visit. KL is an amazing city and very, very cheap. Thailand has facinating culture and the people are so friendly. Also, it's cheaper to fly to Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore than it is to fly to Hong Kong, China, Japan or Korea even though it is futher away...go figure.

When I say semi-warm, I just dont want to go to a cold climate, I can definitely deal with laying on the beach in somewhere tropical! Is Malaysia a safe place to go? My dad once went there on business about 7 years ago and he said that he felt somewhat unsafe. Also my friend said that Bangkok is very dirty, is that just because he wasnt in the right place or is it that way all over SE Asia, even in Bali?

Thanks for your help guys, I look forward to all of your responses...Where would I be without airliners.net?

Malaysia's quite safe...Singapore's even safer. My friend just got back from his honeymoon in Malaysia and he absolutely loved it! In general, Asian countries are much safer than any Western country. There is very little crime. I would be careful if you went to, say, Indonesia or the Philippines, as there is some Islamic extremism there, but I don't think it should be a problem if you stick to the main tourist areas.

Bangkok is a bit dirty, but this isn't the West. You can't place our standards on a different country. Asia really varies in terms of cleanliness. Manila and Beijing are filthy, but Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong are cleaner than any city I've ever been to in Europe, Canada or the U.S.

Hong Kong (before and after 1997)
Taiwan
Philippines (just a short stop in MNL)

Unfortunately, you might find most Asian destinations will charge higher airport taxes than they do Europe.

Won't make for a good holiday if you had to pay some tax would it?  Acting devilish

Visit Singapore. Singapore is very safe and good for shopping. With its size, you are not able to get lost!

Rai, how can you say Seoul is a clean city? Have we been to the same city? The capital of South Korea?

When I have been in Seoul one year ago it was clean, or not less cleaner than other cities in the US or Europe.

Singapore, well, then he could go to KL which is in my opinino even better for shopping and you don't get lost as well over there. The Airport tax is around USD 12 and the train from the airport to downtown is around USD 15-17 and it takes 28 min. for 80km which is very fast.

Go to Kuala Lumpur!

KROC: Dude, I was surprised too because I thought it would be filthy. Put it this way, the air quality leaves much to be desired, but the streets are very clean. It's lightyears better than it wasy, say, five years ago.

YOu could spend months in Malaysia and still not see enough of the place - KL, Langkawi, the East Coast, Sabah and Sarawak are definitely not to be missed.
