What's With Warships In Hong Kong?

Sun Sep 22, 2002 12:58 pm

Last week, there was a US Warship docked right opposite my house, 500metres away, at the middle of harbour. Now this week, there is a Canadian one close the where the US one was and at some distance, there is a Chilian Navy Training ship which is a "Tall Ship" I wonder what's with all those ships in such a short time!

Could have something to do with naval operations in the Indian Ocean (ie Afghanistan)

Probably an exercise. Chile is not participating in the war on terror.

I think there is a long history of naval visits in Hongkong. When I was there in 1998, there was a US warship at the Ocean Terminal. It was a carrier for large helicopters and other stuff for a seaside invasion. I even managed to get a guided tour on that ship. One of the marines told me that they do a "cruise" when the crew is new on the boat. That ship was based in Japan and sailed down to Hongkong for some days as a excercise.

When I was back there in november 2000, a French warship was in Hongkong, also standing at the Ocean Terminal, in the middle of the city.

Well, my visit on USS Dubuque back in 1998 was long before the attack against USS Cole and also before 9/11. I don't think that it would be possible to get on those ships as tourists now.

"Chile is not participating in the war on terror."

Certainly not in sailing ship I hope anyway. Those tall ships go everywhere and just fly the flag. Lots of fun to be on board too.

Well, we don't get visits every day so I was wondering why all those boats came to HK all of a sudden! Especially when they're docked right outside my window!

Warships from all countries visit HK on a regular basis - absolutely no big deal.

That tall ship looks fantastic, I just wish I could have taken a photo of it.

Oh, about those tall ships -- I remembered from a few years ago that there was a tall ship race from Hong Kong to Japan (I think). Dozens of tall ships gathered in HK prior to the race and most of them were berthed at the harbor near the Ocean Terminal/Harbour City area. I was at our office in one of the upper floors at the Gateway Tower (Harbour City) for that one day, and it was an absolutely magnificent sight. Picture this scene in your mind --- all the tall ships in the harbor with the glass and steel skyscrapers on HK Island in the background, overlooked by Victoria Peak. Somehow, I found it hard to concentrate on my work that day!!

Too bad I didn't have my camera with me.  Sad

949,

I remember seeing one or two at that time but they were out near Lantau. Get a small digi camera for your work bag  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I was at Pacific Club seeing those tall ships setting sail for Japan. One of them had a fibreglass hull I think, which is surprising. Yep, I know we often get visits but i was finding the simultaneous visits by warships of multiple countries rather unusual and interesting.
