Berne Could "berne Out" For 2010 Olympic Bid

Mon Sep 23, 2002 1:54 pm

According to, Berne, Switzerland could drop out from the 2010 Winter Olympic bid on Monday.

The number of bidding cities will be down to 3.

A referendum held in Berne, Switzerland shows the a "no" vote on the issue whether the Government should add $8 million for the game bid.

If Berne rejects the Games, Vancouver will be left competing against Salzburg, Austria, and Pyeongchang, South Korea, for the 2010 Olympics.

A website in Toronto called, has pulled Berne out from the bid index, pending the result of the referendum.

The index, which takes into account a variety of factors, correctly forecast Beijing's win over Toronto to host the 2008 Summer Games.

The index shows Salzburg leading at 63.83, Vancouver second with 61.24 and Pyeongchang with 50.46.

When Berne was halted, it was in third place with a rating of 56.56.

The IOC decides on the winning bid in Prague on July 2, 2003.

Looks like Salzburg and Vancouver are compete against each other very hard. But here in Vancouver, we also have some groups that wants referendum. So we may be dropped out to if we hold a referendum before July 2003. Apparently some groups claims not everybody wants to have Olympics at their home.
