Almost 1000 Dead In Senegalese Capsize

Tue Oct 01, 2002 6:21 pm

Officials in Senegal have said that the ship carrying 1,034 passengers, was overcrowded, having been designed to carry about 500, and that it was never meant to go to sea, but remain in calm waters such as a lake. Only about 65 people have survived the accident, which occured when a gust of wind and heavy seas combined to capsize the ship.

The manufacturer of the ferry, "Neue Germersheimer Schiffswerft" (Germany) said that the ship was overloaded by nearly 100% and that possibly the cargo wasn't correctly tightened for a storm.

The victims were mostly from Senegal, but also 20 people from Gambia and 21 europeans from France, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Some reports are saying that the ferry was designed for use on the Rhein River. It couldn't handle the rough waters of the Atlantic.

Ohh how cute! Look We're nutz is trying to be funny!

Its really sad to hear such a horrible event took place with so many people once again. I can only imagine how terrifying the disaster must have been. I am amazed that the ship was overloaded by 100% supposedly! Thats unreal to think load limits could be exceeded without any concerns. Heads need to roll for who ever allowed this ship to leave in such a dangerous configuration.

I know a lot !!! of people who lost their live in that disaster  Sad  Crying

They overloaded the boat. I was just reading that the transport secretary and the defense secretary have resigned.

This should never happened  Pissed the army ( navy ) was responsible to operate
the ferry.

You two (We're Nuts and Apathoid) are the two biggest hypocrits. In one statemnt, you manage to criticize Americans for not showing huge amounts of grief and then show no grief or support on your part. Way to go, you should be proud.

This is a terrible tragedy, and yet you take your shots.

Oh bull. When have I ever shown grief? Never, that's when. And you'll never see the crap coming from this IP. Shit happens.

My post was just intended to show American arrogance.

This is a terrible tragedy. When will people realize that "Maximum passengers 600" means NO MORE THAN 600 PASSENGERS ON BOARD AT ONCE!!!

A terrible disaster indeed. This ship shouldn't have been operating under these conditions. How sad. The victims and their familes have my condolences.

1,000 people?!? Makes Tenerife look like car crash. Funny how plane crashes get so much more attention than, well, anything.

What the hell is wrong with you, We're Nuts??? Do you like anyone? What has gone so wrong in your life to make you so bitter to everyone? You need to seek some professional help.

What's worse than the death toll is that divers have found air pockets where many pax may have survived for hours until they died of hypothermia or suffocated from carbon dioxide buildup.

God bless the survivors and the families of those who were not.

TWAL1011;

Why should we're nuts care about anyone?

There are over 6 Billion people on this planet. I hate to break it to you but from a purely human standpoint we're a dime a dozen.

And People Die! Is that so hard to take?

I don't expect anyone to care when I die; so why should I expect anyone to care when anyone else dies?  Insane

this was very upsetting. a thousand senegalese and no one knows let alone cares.

terrible tragedy, even worse when i read in the next article on cnn that some woman thanked god for looking out for her because she survived a bank robbery that occured across the street.

god looked out for her but not for 1,000 innocnet senegalese.

Unfortunately, the truth remains that a Senegalese life is a darn sight less valuable on average than an American or even a European life. From a purely economic standpoint, this is the equivalent of maybe 50 Americans being killed somewhere. Senegal simply isn't important enough for the world to care.

The ferry was certified for unse in coastal waters which effectively means that it could be used in the Atlantic. The main factor was the over-loading and probably cargo-shifting. Another name in the long list of horrible ship desasters: "Estonia", "King of Scandinavia", "Hearald of free Enterprise", the philipine (?) desaster killing nearly 4,000 people... RIP all who lost their lifes...

The way I look at it, it makes no sense technically to feel sorry for the dead. They're clearly in a much better position as we are, being removed from a life of sorrow and suffering. However as human beings, we do feel a sense of grief at the tragicness of the situation, or the senseless and preventable loss of life. We also feel compassionate for those family members, especially orphans, left behind.

But I do agree that it seems Third World lives are worth much less than a First World life. A thousand people suddenly dying in one tragedy would cause an unprecedented outpour of worldwide grief lasting several weeks had it occurred in the U.S.

The way We're Nuts argument is flawed, is in the fact that on Sept. 11 2001 3,000 people were murdered. The WTC attacks were no accident.

That said, I agree with Hepkat that unfortunately, disasters in develloped 1st world nations seem to be much more important then those that happen in 3rd world countries. Media coverage seems to be the main problem.  Sad

I cannot even fathom the helpless and horrible situations many people most have been caught in that night.

How about a Canadian life? Or what about a Brazillian life? Or Japanese? It's really a shame what this topic has become. Someone posts a story, a really sad one at that, and we have a few people (including a forum moderator, no less  Insane) who make a few snide politcal remarks to ruin the purpose of this thread. And if some of you guys didn't have the beliefs that you did, would you even care about this story? Seriously...

How about leaving it as it is and keeping the political bullshit out of this. Is that too much to ask? I would hope not, but given the maturity of this place, it seems akin to asking someone to move mountains.
