College Students: Then And Now...

Wed Oct 02, 2002 6:26 am

It's been quite a few years since I was in college. I notice that students now are way more sure of what they want to do from the get go. When I was a student, I didn't have a fucking clue of what I wanted to do and swtiched majors several times until settling on one my third year. Does not seem to be the case today. From my observations -- based on my sister, who is a student now, college students on this forum, and other people -- students today know ahead of time what they want to do career-wise and what major they need to accomplish their goals. If I had it over again, I would have done a different major to get into the career of my choice.

Do any of you notice the same thing or is it just me? Are students today really that much more sure of their goals that those of pervious years?

I'd like to hear your comments about this.

Well, I know why I'm majoring in what I am, because it interests me and I'm good at it.

As far as knowing EXACTLY what one wants to do, I think it's a bad idea to zero in on just one goal, and I think leaving yourself open to a wide variety of careers within your field is a wise choice.

All I want to do is use my skills to get a job I'll like doing in the field of commercial aviation.

I wouldn't say most students know exactly what they want to do, but I think more students coming into college now have a better idea of what they want to do in the future and switch majors once or twice as opposed to two or three times.

Most of the kids I am going to school with know what they are doing and what they are majoring in. Actaully, I only have one friend that is undecided. I think that recently going "undecided" has been kind of frowned upon by colleges and high schools try to get you to a decision before you leave. I am not totally decided, but that is alright because I will transfer out of the school I am in at the end of the year. I do know that I will probably double major in intl business/aviation mgmt....however if I get into a better school that doesnt have aviation mgmt, then I will just do intl business.

Rai, furthermore, if you are basing this idea on what you have seen on a.net, you have to remember than virtually all of us are aviation fanatics in one aspect or another. I have yet to meet someone on a.net whose main interest is culinary arts!

Rai, I would beg to differ with you.

What folks in higher ed are seeing is longer time to completion for students, which suggests a lot of uncertainty (financially and academically) among students. If indeed students were more focused with what they wanted to, we would see decreasing time to completion. In addition there is an interesting trend occuring called "swirling." That is recent graduates, with BAs going to community colleges to get specific vocational training.

Same as it ever was: most guys in college today are still wasting their daddy's money on:

1. sex
2. beer
3. sex

Numbers 1 and 3 are usually accomplished via late night and early morning wanking sessions, so the expense is not great. Number 2 above can become astronomical.

College women are who are smart stay away from the typical college puke male.  Big grin
