Anyone tried this? Which part of Italy is the best to stay?

No doubt.
The Tuscany area (south of Florence) is one of the best in the world.

Be carfull when you think:

Agriturismo= cheap and high quality resturant/accomodation

sometimes, expecially in Tuscany are really expensive.

Few years ago a new law here in Italy give the possibility to get money and to pay less taxes if you rebuild an old farm house in the countryside and then you open inside a resturant/accomodation.
To be called Agriturismo you have to use in your resturant at least 40% of prouducts who come from your own productions (ie. milk, eggs, pasta, vegetable, meat....)

Tuscany is the region I had in mind. But there are many area you can stay. Mb339 mentioned southern Tuscany. One farmhouse I liked so far - a compromise between price and facilities - is in San Marcello Pistoiese. What is that area like?
Thank you for your advice.

San Marcello Pistoiese is in the middle of Appennino (the mountain who run from North to South Italy) and it's in the north of Tuscany, quite far from the "real Tuscany", that's in the south part of the district.
So if you plan to visit Siena, Pisa, Arezzo and San Gimignano, you need to drive more than one hours and half.

Thank you both again. I have taken your advice and searched for a property in Southern Tuscany. I found one in Montepuliciano near Siena. The surrounding villages are a dream. What can you tell me about this place?
