Of course, this is all highly subjective, but here are my comments regarding your "world" list...

Beijing and Tokyo (and possibly Berlin) belong in the top ten, don't you think?

By my standards, Paris is more "important" than Rio, Cairo, or Sydney.

Toronto in the top ten? Especially over Tokyo and Paris? That's funny.

Here is my list with my reasons.

USA
1. Washington, D.C. (capital -- 'nuff said)
2. New York City (finance center/biggest city/transportation hub/)
3. Los Angeles (cultural influence/media/entertainment)
4. Chicago (manufacturing/transportation)
5. Boston (finance/banking/history)
6. San Francisco (political movements)
7. Dallas (oil/political clout/growing transportation hub)
8. Houston (oil/political clout)
9. Atlanta (regional hub/transportation hub/media center)
10. Detroit (manufacturing/growing transportation hub)

World
1. Washington, D.C. (U.S. capital/IMF/World Bank)
2. New York City (finance/culture/U.N./media)
2. London (finance/U.K. capital/transportation center)
4. Tokyo (finance/Japan capital/regional center)
5. Hong Kong (finance/regional center/gateway to the largest consumer market...but not for much longer/transportation hub)
6. Los Angeles (major media center)
7. Paris (French capital/politics)
8. Singapore (finance center/regional hub/transportation center)
9. Moscow (Russian capital)
10. Chicago (transportation hub/manufacturing)

Some honorable mentions: Zurich (banking center), Geneva (U.N.), Baghdad (seriously, this place really has an influence on world events), Jerusalem (major influence on world events, for better and for worse), Frankfurt (financial center of Europe's largest economy), Berlin (German capital).

And I think New York and London are of equal importance to the world. Both cities are very, very similar.

Rai, I tend to agree with your lists, but I would say that, given its dominance in fields such as media and culture (and its overall international importance), New York is actually more important that Washington, D.C.

Los Angeles is a candidate for the top ten list SOLELY because of Hollywood.

Zurich and Geneva, despite their importance in the fields you mentioned, are probably too marginal in all other respects to qualify for the top ten.

And, yes, Beijing does need to be up there somewhere.

Well, what do we mean by 'important'?

Does importance mean population size? Financial revenue? A place where news is made?

I'd appreciate the author of this thread Flymia, to clarify.

Nice to see that Detroit didnt make anybody's list... We only are the headquarters of 3 major automotive companies that in some way, shape, or form manufacture or assist in the manufacture of most of the world's automobiles.

Actually, Tokyo is the world's biggest city. New York City is next. I don't even think Mexico makes the top five. But it is a large city, nonetheless.

No, it's Mexico City.

Tokyo is actually many large and small cities combined (Tokyo, Chiba, Yokohama, Kanazawa, Urawa and many others in Saitama. Much like NY is not one city. Tokyo itself is only about 8 million.

Have to go to work now but will post the real numbers from The Bible (aka,The Econmist Book of Numbers) when I get home.

Nope. I'll save you the trouble. Largest metro areas:

Tōkyō Japan 34900000 incl. Yokohama, Kawasaki
New York USA 21600000 incl. Newark, Paterson
Sŏul (Seoul) South Korea 21150000 incl. Inchon, Songnam
Ciudad de México Mexico 20750000 incl. Nezahualcóyotl, Ecatepec, Naucalpan
São Paulo Brazil 20250000 incl. Guarulhos
Mumbai (Bombay) India 18150000 incl. Kalyan, Thane, Ulhasnagar
Ōsaka Japan 18000000 incl. Kobe, Kyoto
Delhi India 17150000 incl. Faridabad & Ghaziabad
Los Angeles USA 16800000 incl. Riverside, Anaheim
Jakarta Indonesia 15850000 incl. Bekasi, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang

Check this site out: http://www.citypopulation.de/

In terms of principal cities, Seoul is the largest. I think Mumbai is next. NYC, Tokyo and Mexico city are around the same size in this regard.

I can't believe no one thinks Sao Paulo is one of the most important cities.

SP is the center of South America in finance, all South American counties' economies are traded in SP daily. Hundreds of major banks around the world have towers along Avenue Paulista. SP is the media center for S America, and Rio is not even close. We are one of the top five largest cities in the world, the city proper itself has over 11 million people, more than NYC and Tokyo. Rio is more famous, and is only known for tourism, tits, and violent crime, and not much else.  Smile

For the world, I think there is no single number one city. I think most people look to a single city within their continents for importance.

North America: NYV
South America: Sao Paulo
Europe: London or Frankfurt
Asia: Tokyo
Africa: Johannesburg or Cairo

Difficult question to answer as many citys are important for different reasons.

Brussels, capital of the EU, that makes it definitely the worlds most important city what EU politics concerns.

Antwerp, 76% of the worlds diamont trade passes trough Antwerp. So Antwerp is number one for the diamont bussines.

London, GMT is London time.

Paris, Fashion capital of the world, or is it Milano nowadays?

Hollywood, most important place for showbizz.

Las Vegas, the world's gambling capital.  Nuts

Atlanta, capital of Coca Cola, for some people this city will definitely be the most important one.  Laugh out loud

New York, The UN capital.

Brussels, NATO headquarters.

Tokyo-London-New York. For the stock markets.

RayChuang, Frankfurt is definitely not Germany's media capital. I think it's Hamburg with Berlin as a close second.

What makes a city "important", btw?
nevertheless, here's my list:

Washington D.C.
NYC
London
Tokyo
Beijing
Paris
Berlin
BRU
Kairo
Sydney / or Toronto / or FRA
