Anyone Here Own An Exotic Pet?

Fri Oct 11, 2002 6:18 am

I ran across an article about someone who raised a flying squirrel.

Does anyone hear have a pet flying squirrel (sugar glider)? Any other weird pets you may own???

We have a schanuzer, a kitten and a conure (bird).

The conure is our most 'exotic.'

I had a Mexican Red-legged Taratula as a kid. It lived to be about 24 years old. She was very tame and docile. Best pet I ever had. They're not noisy and you only have to feed them about once a month. Also, you're never supposed to clean their cages. I think they are endangered now. Ahhh, what a beauty she was.

I also had a pirahna named 'Fang'.

Come on KROC, trouser-snake your pet? I think we know who's the pet and who's the master in that relationship.

I sort of have what could be considered "semi-exotic." My only pet is a dog, but a pretty strange one, at least for the US. I don't know about other parts of the world for the breed. She is a whippet. Whippets are sort of like 1/3rd sized grey hounds. My dog is 28 pounds/13kg (sorry, I don't know how to convert that to kg, so it might be wrong). She is also very skinny. I wish I could get in the minds of people that have seen me taking her for a walk and don't know what she is. They probably think I'm starving her, seeing that "poor", "emaciated" thing.

Dripstick, I always look forward to your pics! Cute.

Actually, I have heard of Whippets and seen photos, but never met an owner. Very cool. Would you post a photo here?

No squirrel owners, eh?

Niles Crane had a Whippet in an episode of Frasier.

Frasier: " ... she's a canine substitute for Maris ... She is high strung, cold to the touch and ignores you. My God, stand her upright, take 10 lbs. off her, put her in a Chanel suit and what have you got!"

Whippets: Aren't they supposed to be the "fastest dogs in the world" or something? I think I remember reading that once in a book about dogs?

Flying squirrels: That was in Reader's Digest, wasn't it? I saw the article to which you were referring, and it made me kind of wish that I had a flying squirrel, too.  Smile

About 8 years ago I had quite a collection (30+) of semi-exotic snakes --kingsnakes, milksnakes and rat snakes. Here's a California Kingsnake like one that I had: http://www.photovault.com/Link/Animals/Reptiles/Snakes/show.asp?tg=ARSVolume01/ARSV01P02_10.1713

Yep, that reader's digest article had me wishing the same.

Yep, I can't spell schnauzer late at night. So I call him Billy.

There isn't much on the internet about howe to keep a flying squirrel as a pet. Too bad, seemed like a cool one to have.

Just to add my two "centavos" here...
xxx
I have two Siamese cats (and they are twin sisters too) - model "Seal Points" - with the standard blue eyes, 4 years old... no way to differentiate them, so one has a blue neck collar, the other one has a red one...
The problem is that my son thinks it's funny to trade their collars, darned kid...
xxx
The other pet is a dog... 3 years old... named Nikita...
Siberian Husky, a Mr. Dog... confuses my shoes and the trees...
Obviously, he barks in Spanish, but this, with a Russian accent...
I heard he had an affair with a tall lady French Poodle at the parc...
xxx
Then my favorite pet, my wife Marcela... quite exotic... 1969 model...
crossbreed, 75% Italian, 25% Guarani (native tribe of N. Argentina)...
By luck she does not speak English - she would kill me with her fangs...

I'll post a picture of the breed of my dog (Whippet) and try to post an actual picture of her later.

Picture of breed:

That one has coloring almost exactly like mine, but mine is a little bit smaller. Her name is Millie.

Mirrodie, she's an excellent family pet! She doesn't snap at people if they were to pet her while eating (good aspect for families with little children). They are very clean, so baths are not in order very often. My dog probably appreciates that because she hates baths. They don't eat all that much. They are good around other animals and with people. Whippets are not as frail as they look. They are really quite unfrail. One big problem though is that whippets can be incredibly destructive. Ours has chewed up CDs, both couches, stuffed animals, purses, camera straps, toys, a crate (Yes. A crate. It was this really cool mesh material that made it collapsable.), etc., etc., etc. The list of things that have fallen victim to Millie go on and on and on. Apparently destructiveness is a common whippet thing. That is not something that should deter you though if you are ready to get a dog. You just have to be VERY diligent about putting it in a crate when you leave. Do not just gate it into the kitchen. Put it in a crate. Something that we do that works very well is that we had a doggie door put in and we put the cage up to the doggie door if we are going to be gone for a few hours. That way Millie can go in and out of the house as she pleases, but cannot get into the rest of the house beyond her crate. She loves the doggie door anyway. Whippets are great dogs. Remember that each one has a personality of its own and that they won't all be like I have listed above, but that is some general whippet info. You have to really want one though because they are hard to get. Most of them are sold for racing or show and you have to pay a lot of money for those ($1000 probably). What you'll have to do is find a breeder and wait until they have a litter in which one of the dogs doesn't seem to be a good runner and isn't fit for showing. We got ours because at the time they committed, she didn't look like she was interested in running (she later did, but they were already committed) and was not fit for showing. She had a sniped muzzle which means that the colorings of her fir on her nose made the nose appear shorter than it really was. I later noticed that she has black whiskers on one side of her nose and white on the other. I don't know if that would have been a problem or not. It took us 6-9 months to find her though, so if you decide that you really want a whippet, don't give up in finding one. The end result is worth it! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at greentoad340@bellsouth.net.

I don't own any exotic pets (in fact I don't own any pets at all) but I used to date a girl who owned an iguana and a bunch of deadly spiders. Needless to say, she was over at my place a lot.

Right now I have a Russian cat...
I used to have: sheep, a cow, a snake, 7 dogs, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 2 birds, 1 hamster.
I really would like to get: a tiger, a goat, an eagle, and a falcon.
