Australian Citizenship/Permanent Residency

Hi. Suppose I am a student in Sydney, Australia and I hold a Student Visa; is it possible for me to apply to become a Permanent Resident or landed immigrant of Australia? If yes, how? I am a Canadian Citizen/Passport holder.

If not, can I apply upon graduation?

I doubt that you can apply for extended or permanent residency while you were here under a student visa unless your government turns into a vicious dictatorship and massacres everyone who lives in that pseudo-England part of Ontario around London or something, like when the Chinese govt sent the tanks into Tinnemum(sp?) Square and Chinese students could apply to stay if they believe that they would be in danger if they were to return home.
