Racial Categories In The USA

Tue Oct 22, 2002 10:57 am

I just took the PSAT, and was rather surprised and upset with the racial chices:

- White/Anglo
- Mexican/Hispanic
- Puerto Rican
- Other South/Central American
- African American/Black
- American Indian
- Asian/Pacific Islander

I find it upsetting that any one from America or Europe is consider as white/anglo. Just because I am white does not mean that I am anglo. Not everybody from Europe has the typical anglo look. Also, Asia only has one race. An Arab from the Middle East is in the same racial category as a person from China, or an inhabitant of Figi. Meanwhile, a Puerto Rican is not in the same category as a Mexican, or someone from, say Panama. Though I know that these nationalities are different, it just makes no sense that a vast Area covering half of the globe (Asia & Pacific Islands) are considered one race, while there are three separate races for Latin Americans of Spanish descent. It just makes little sense to me.

My policy, when asked such a question, is to not respond. It is none of their f***ing business, and an entirely inappropraite question to ask.

Problem is that if you don't check it they know you're white, as if you were any other race, checking it would benefeit you. I think the whole system should be abolished.

Cba,
As you've now seen, racial categories in the United States make very little sense. In fact, they make even less sense as time goes on, thanks to immigration from more and more countries whose people can't easily be pigeonholed, and the increase in the number of people with racially mixed backgrounds. I'm pretty disgusted with the whole thing.

Any person who is half black, a quater black, or hell, even a tenth black would check African American because of extra scholarships and financial aid options available.

Now would a Morrocan check African American?

Apparently the fastest growing group in the US is mixed race, due to all the mixed marriages.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
