Free Press World Rankings

Thu Oct 24, 2002 11:24 pm

"Reporters Sans Frontières" published today the world's first index of press freedom.
There's some surpises in these rankings, with a very bad mark for Italy (40th among 139 countries).

Israel and Turkey are ranked 92th and 99th, despite their democratic political regime.
And the worst countries (where you'd better not to be journalist...) are, without surprise, China and North Korea.
A shame that China got the 2008 olympics...

Italy is not really a surprise, Berlusconi (the PM) controls nearly the whole press there.

Interesting site. I like to have a closer look at it sometime.

Press freedoms are important freedoms. It keeps those who govern us accountable.

Even elected leaders try to get away with some pretty brazen schemes while living with the danger of what would happen if the media found out. Could you imagine just how bad things would get if they didn't have to worry about it?

(Hint: Compare the general quality of life in countries 01-07 on the list above to that in countries 121-139.)
