2002 Winston Cup Championship- Who's It Gonna Be?

Mon Oct 28, 2002 10:39 am

With the race in Atlanta today, Tony Stewart has a 146 point lead on Mark Martin. I think that Stewart just has to hang on to take it all- he's won at two of the 3 remaining tracks (Phoenix & Homestead), and is looking strong. He's my pick with 3 to go (although it may be an obvious choice.) The tight points battle that's been that way all season may finally have a clear-cut leader.

For the NASCAR fans- Do you think that Stewart's got it, or can Johnson or Martin make a late charge & pull an upset?

Loosely related to the topic, but interesting anyway-
NASCAR.com reports that Sterling Marlin, who had the points lead for the majority of the season before getting hurt, could return for the Phoenix race, as long as his doctors clear him.

With todays strong finish by Stewart, I'll bet anything that he is going to win the championship.

I'm really rooting for Johnson though, a rookie winning the points championship, now that would be something to see.

Then you have Mark Martin, one of the classiest drivers in Winston Cup IMO still not having one championship victory at his age, it's a shame because he has so much talent. I would love it for him and Jack Roush to win, but they may be a bit too far back and they are running out of time.

What about Rusty Wallace? Do you think he'll win one so he can keep his 16 year(?) winning streak alive. (He has one at least one race each year for the past 16 years)

As much as I wish Dale Jarrett could win it this year, it just doesn't look like he can come back this late...
Right now, and I hate it, I have to say Stewart will pull it off. Unless he has major problems and Martin or Johnson can have a few good runs, nothing can stop him. And that won't happen. Stewart showed today he was running a semi-conservative race. Of course you never know, Jimmy Johnson lost a tire today at Atlanta, but I doubt it. Stewart has finally pulled to a large enough margin that even with top 15 finishes the rest of the way through he can pull it off.
You have to hold hope for Martin. Have to feel sorry for the guy...he runs so good for so many years, and still can't pull the dang thing off. He's a good guy, he would make a good champion, but it just doesn't look like it can happen. He is too prone to marginal and middle of the field finishes.
So, realistically, unless someone can pull off a string of top-3 finishes for the remaining 3 races, and Stewart has at least one bad race, Stewart has his first championship. Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I just don't see that happening. Either Jimmy or Mark have to have Old Faithful consistency over the last 3 races, and Stewart has some bad luck for anyone but Stewart to win. It is his Championship to win.

But don't worry, Ryan Newman and Dale Jarrett will mop up the field next year. No competition.

I am a Michael Waltrip fan, but since he unfortunately has no chance, I'm going to say Tony Stewart has the best shot at it. Of the 3 main contenders, I would like to see Mark Martin win, to cap off an amazing career, but I don't think he can beat Stewart. Oh well, at least it is within 150 points in Cup, Busch AND the Trucks, so Homestead is going to be exciting for once, no thanks to the racing however lol.

Gotta agree on Stewart, which goes to show you the talent of Gibbs Racing. 2 W.C. champions in 3 years is not bad. And next year they'll be in Chevys. I have been a long time Mark Martin fan dating back to the Strohs beer car and I just don't think it's in the cards. But you never know in Nascar. Remember the year Alan Kulwicki won the Championship?

I hope Rusty can win one this year to keep the streak alive!! I hated it when Ricky Rudd's streak ended in 1999. Kinda cool to see how drivers can be consistent like that.

Too bad Gordon's out of it- he looked like he had a shot & was up in there for a long time (without a win!) before fading more recently. There's always next year!

Stewart's got it in the bag, sadly, I can't stand him or Jimmie Johnson. If all goes well, Rusty or Newman will win it.
